What a world we had to explore as kids. The big centurion tank at the back of tin town. Robbing the orchard of cidona apples. Watching my big brothers play snooker in sands. trips to the firing range to collect empty shells. A gang of us walking to Donnelly's hollow avoiding parse as we thought they were a rough crowd.O Higgins tce people were a cut above lol

Hi cellicman and welcome. Ah! that was not nice saying us "Pearse lads" were a rough crowd, it was just that we came from the higher echelon of the Camp, living in the "Military College" area, it was all the brains we had and the frustration of having to live with the likes of those from the lower echelons . Thought that I might mention it I married a girl from O Higgins Terrace so we were not that bad! Just brainy and very good looking. AND YOU STARTED IT !

Hi cellicman and all. Without calling in the UN lets make peace. My dad served in the Mil College also, he was the BSM there, and probably served with your Dad, so we have a good deal in common, Matts dad and Maryfs father also served there, I can see where your dad was coming from, as when, any of a servings soldiers kids got into trouble their dad was paraded in front of his CO and giving a good ticking off about keeping his children under control, needless to say there was more than a ticking off from your Da when he got home. Yours in Peace Joey

Hi Ger Reference the Person who looked after the Tower/water tank area, that person was Paddy Power ex Sgt Depot Engineers he was Fire Station Sgt while in service, and I think he took over from Jim Noone. The job of the person who looked after that location was to make sure that the Water levels in the big tanks were kept up to scratch, these water filled tanks were and still are used for Fire Fighting purposes within the Camp, they are for the lower levels of the Camp. Paddy sadly passed on about 2 years ago and you were right Majella, Kay were daughters. Porky Flynn, Paddy Slattery and now Johnny Quinn did that job thereafter.
Regards

I have been reading some of the 'Do you remembers' during my lunch hour at work, which is long gone and I am now on my Employers time, this site is so addictive!! Anyway, I was reading about some of the dog stories and I was thinking about the dogs that lived in our area. We had Tara and she was "married" to Rusty Prendergast and they had several families (I think). Then there was Tinker O'Carroll and our favourite chant was "what was the name of McAuliffe's dog" because for weeks we couldn't remember it when they moved from the park and eventually we got it - Chubby!! Isn't it great that the animals were all part of the family life in the Curragh - I think I'm home sick

Hi All Anyone remember going out around the curragh plains collecting mushrooms [not the magic kind] many a time we went out with our father very early in the morning and a couple of times i picked up the [sheep farts] as we called them, they would burst and out came a puff of green mist disgusting. The mushrooms today just don't taste the same. Geraldine

Hi cellicman. What a great snap. Taken just off O Donnells shop on the green opposite Biddy Dobbins, you can actually see the old garage which is now gone to make way for the New Museum and the entrance door to Dermott Feelys Chemist shop on the lower end of the picture. I have only just contacted John Byrne, Pats Brother as shown in th snap. Pat now a Priest as you probably know. Love the sandals. They were probably on issue to us kids, as practically every old photo shown has people wearing them I even remember the cheaper plastic types. PS my brother Butch also joined the Royal Navy along with Tossy (chemmer).
