Hi Matt,
Just reading your post Re: Blackie, a local girl working in the big hospital at the time the boys from Zambia were here was busy with the Lead Swinger, one of the Zambians was a patient in the hospital, he said good afternoon to her and remarked she was working hard, to which she replied without thinking "like a black" a common phrase then and there was no offence taken. What a novelty it was when they arrived, we all took great delight in any sighting of them. Six in number I think arrived.

Hi Roy,
Dinkie was not our dog. I lived in No.11 B Block McDonagh MQRS in 1959 when you left with your family for Dublin. I don't remember the Smiths you are talking about, but my sister does, she maintains there was a girl named Alice in the family, I cant ask any further up as there was only the two of us.
We had a dog called Floss when I was very small barely remember him. You are right about the changes, hard to believe the green belt held three blocks of houses. As long as the Tower and the Steeple remain we will still get the buzz that seems to be common place to all ex-residents returning home.

Hi All, Just wondering does anyone remember the obstacle coure in McDonagh?(near the rugby pitch) Myself and a few others from o'higgins tce would spend many a day down there. What great fun we would have doing the course, my favourite was the swinging boat, and by god could we make it swing, i would make it swing that high that i would do a sumersault off it. How none of us were seriously injured i will never know. We just never had any fear in us. Does anyone know if that course is still there?? Would love the get another go on the swinging boat (without the sumersault ha ha) just to bring back the happy memories.
Cheers Olive

Hi Olive I remember the assault course, if I remember rightly the last time I went home it was no longer there, which is a shame, I think everyone loved going there although I don't think I get around it now. It was great fun and kept us all fit. But it has been a few years since I went there.
Cheers Mary

Hi Teresa, We would have to chain ourselves to the Tower and the Steeple should the knocking ball ever come within reach of them.
Monica was not down a lot this Summer and only got down once myself, a lot going on here, you know yourself all goes fine and then you get your share, but am glad to report all trying to get back to normal now. Will pass on your regards.
Rose.

Hi Kathyo,
The tower you are on about between the church and the school is the clock tower, its set in the middle of the water tanks. A really nice piece of architecture, but as far as I can remember when we were kids the clocks were never right.
Can remember Mam going to have a perm, while I was quite young, she was even longer than the customary three to four hours and Dad asked me to go up and see if she was ok. When I went in she was attached to a machine, think the machine must have heated the rollers, can remember the smell of shinging hair, and thought when I went in first that they were trying to electrocute her. The same result, the perm was so tight she would be ages trying to comb it in the mornings, (no afro combs then) looked more like frizzled hair than an actual style. Mam got Monica a perm when she was about thirteen, ( have a photograph of same, but if I posted it she would never speak to me again) can still remember her words when she looked in the mirror they were "my life is over".

Its great to be chatting with people, I suppose we thought we would never see or hear from again. The second you read a thread the memories come flooding back.

Does anyone who went to the Girls National School remember every Friday at break time the siren would go off, I think it was at about 11 o'clock from the Fire Station/Water Tower? I remember someone saying it was to let everyone know that the soldiers had just been paid!!!
