Johnny 1951 can you see the parents of todays kids letting them follow horses pulling a hay mowing machine, or a corn binder, or giving a 10 year old a scythe to open a headland of barley, or how about a steel tumbler rake at hay making time, or the big wooden tumble rake, when you remember all the things you did when you were growing up and no training, the only training I got was the same most my age was to watch your elders, I well remember when I was about 11 standing on a trashing mill feeding it with corn and a trashing drum going at high speed only inches from you, and how about that BIG knife you used for snagging turnips and crowning sugar beet, I suppose I had it easy compared to small farmers children, they had to stay up all hours watching cows calving, sheep giving birth to lambs, sows farrowing, mares giving birth to a foal, I have listed only a fraction of what you were expected to do and often times you still had to go to school the next day. Ah well rant over for now?.

Ned if you were to ask most kids of today to do half of what was expected of us in our younger days you would get locked up for child abuse, and probably taken off you and into care. One cannot get down and dirty these days. with so many health and safety requirements that must be adhered to.it is no wonder that kids of today have no way to fight infections, and dont know how to make their way in the world. But we cannot say that hard work did us any harm indeed that it prepared us to be better and good people and guided us to get us where we are today. speaking for myself i have no regrets for the way we had to graft hard growing up cutting turf saving the hay working on the fruit farm to have a few bob in the pocket. those were the days good old days they were. bye for now keep well. johnny

Steady on there "Ned" We might have one of them P/C warriors watching to see that our opinion does not upset them and telling us how to alter our way of life to suit their opinion, something they keep trying to stop other people from having. Ex Tpr Kelly, Ex 1st Armd Sqdn, 53-54-55

Hi Ned unfortunately they were the times that existed at the time. I myself suffered as i did not go to the Mess on a wed a/noon and fri a/noon.but the good times far out weigh the bad times, TG times have changed and with bar opening times restricted to 7pm mon to fri it makes for a better work place but it does not stop bullies coming out and making things hard for individuals, this will always happen but tg there are redress systems in place to deal with this. keep well bye for now Johnny

Hi all. I remember the smell of peat burning in the camp during winter. I also remember coming back from the glen of imaal after exercises and I was in the lead scorpion tank when it overturned. Corporal O'Shea was driving, I was gunner and a guy called Dave (forgive me I cant remember his surname) was in the commanders side. That was if memory serves me well march 28 1985.
