Calling all Shadowers!
I for one think its now time for action. We've seen through the years the wanton destruction of the residential areas of the camp, all our old homes vanished without trace raized to the ground only to live on in our memories and through this site. We,ve mourned in silence the passing of on era as the various governments down through the years ordered the demolition of buildings that had stood for so much to all who had had the good fortune to dwell in them. They the Dept of Defence faced no protest because, inbred in all of us was the army way which was if an order was given it had to be followed without question.
But the one thing that they have failed to take into consideration is that the Spirit of the Curragh came from the people. What set us apart was and still is the unique bond of the characters who lived within. All we have to do is read the threads to see how dear and important our community and life is to us. But now the very fabric of our existence is being threathened when they're at their most vulnerable. The older residents the backbone of the Curragh are to be thrown on the scrapheap? They have lived and worked their fingers to the bone keeping large families clothed and fed under primitive conditions. They struggled to make ends meet and we all know how hard an existence that was! Now when they're comfortably settled with some of todays little luxurys in the only homes they've known they're to be thrown out where is the justice in that? If we heard about this happening in any other part of the world there would be public outcry and protests and yes offers to take them in and provide them with homes and anything else they needed.
Sorry everyone I rattled on and on as usual without getting to the point. Lets hear that ONE VOICE now let us fight back for the very people who fought for us through our early years who helped to make us the good people we are today. Let them know they're not alone and that they will have the backing of the Curragh Community behind them. We might not all be living within the confines of the Camp or under the Shadow but we are still that same people one for all and all for one!
So if everyone contacted their local radio went to see their TD called the newspapers and the TV. Even wrote to the President who had the privilege of meeting and shaking hands with the very same residents only a couple of months ago. If the Veterans associations got behind this campaign as well then the powers that be will see that they are threatening a very substantial group of determined current and ex Curragh Folk[and possible voters]WE all come from fighting families and now is our chance to fight for them to pay them back,to say thank you and say you really matter to us we care. At least in years to come if it fails it wasn't without a fight and we can hold our heads up high and know we didn't bury our heads in the sand! Is anyone with me?
Bye for now Mary
