Hi Kathyo, I remember well the Protestant Church, me and my friends used to walk past and call the kids names, and pull faces at them., they were always to polite to answer us back. We were also in awe of the way they were dressed. I seem to remember there was a hall/house next to the Church and remember going in there once - did they hold jumble sales there? Keep posting. Eileen That church a good place as were Cannon Knowles and his family also The McGee's good families Under the church we had our hops / discos which gave plenty of enjoyment and employment as well as being used for other activities. next door the Wes a meeting place for youth sharing a coke and a bag of chips any other proprietor would have run us it also gave employment a lot of good in the whole establishment and you are right those kids were very well behaved

Hi All As a youngster i remember been told never to go inside the church as it was only for people who did not believe in god and you would get into big trouble, also if the door was open which was not very often i would walk past as quick as i could and never looked in. Even to this day i have never been near the doors of the church, who knows one day i might give it a go and actually get to see what i was so afraid of all them years ago. GERALDINE

Ger, Being told stories I heard that one, also that they did not believe in the Virgin Mary, but to be sure the tellers knew nothing about that brand of christanity, a lot of taboos back then probably still are, I do remember talking to the Knowles Children and they knew more about their faith then I did about mine They assured me God was the father Jesus his son and Mary his mother cant really remember the differences and dont really care , have had my puss in churches of other religons and still here not on fire yet.
I think when it came to making the communion or confirmation I could only see £.s.d. that was the money in my time.

Hi all As long as I lived in the Camp, I was never in that Church until just before Christmas last. It was the fear of being struck down and getting excommunicated that set this train in motion. Even my insane curiosity would never allow me to enter same, even though I went to the hops in the supper room below the church, used the Wes as a meeting place, and had the usual chips and so on there. Cannon Freddie Knowles and his sons were real gentle people when you got to know them. I was passing one day like I said and met a friend of mine whom I often met in Ladbrokes placing a bet and never knew he was of the opposite persuasion, he was cleaning up outside the church in preparation for a funeral, and I asked him if I could have a look inside, he invited me in and some ladies were polishing and cleaning around I was made so welcome and was assured, by them that they did not grow horns or eat Catholics. I was amazed at the sparseness of the place no statues or pictures. I was told that I could visit at any time when the place was open and even invited to any of the services, this I intend to take up at some given time. Regards
JoeyK

Hi Andy Thats makes it easier now i know i wont explode if i do enter through them doors. As for making the communion and confirmation money was the only thing on our minds and i think its the same with some kids today it seems it the first question they as each other, how much did you make and where did you go, for my confirmation i got as far as kildare into the market and the pub the [silken] forget what it was called back then now days its trips to Disney in Paris and god nows where how times have changed. Hi Joey, Andy and All, Reading through all the posts about this church and remembering the fear of even glancing in the direction of same that we would be burned in hell for eternity!! I liked Cannon Knowles he was a gentle man and his family were so polite and well mannered. We must have looked and sounded so daunting to them but they didn't run or walk away they stayed and tryed to answer our questions. Because lets face it we thought we were the chosen ones Joey please take up the invitation to attend the services and you will be amazed at how much of the service is so like ours and the bible is practically the same. Like Ger said they don't believe in the virgin Mary. Shes got that one right, they pray and worship Mary the mother of Jesus the only thing that they don't accept is the virgin bit. A lot of our kids find that hard to accept or even believe either so what do we do? Bye For Now MaryF

Mary.
On the virgin point how many Irish Mammies would believe their daughters if they came in claiming that an Angel had his wicked way with them and mammy you should rejoice ,in our time I think not, yet our creed decreed that it could happen,

Mary Another point there is not a whole lot of difference between any of the Christian Church's Orthodox or otherwise they were once one till the break up,
Same for the Pope I think there are at least nine at any one time
