Hi Tommy,
You were right. The house number in Hare park WAS incorrect. But thanks to your great work I have identified my Grandfather. 1527 C/S MURPHY.J. 18/12/1926 09/08/1927 Without the information on this website, our family tree search would have come to a shuddering halt. Many, many thanks for taking the time to transcribe all the information, it has proved invaluable.

Hi All,
Well having lived in those "Officers Quarters" yes they all had names and can be found on the pearse married quarters list. The houses had names so had the "Officers and their families"!!! Remember being asked Once did we "Officers Children have to wash and dress before dinner", lol Having gone to school in the Curragh , we never knew any difference and my father came up through the ranks, as Andy will know we we were never any different. Hi Claire,
A thorny subject this one, and one I will shy away from for the moment. yep Michael (RIP) did come through the Ranks and if it was equated to civvy street then he would have been classed as a self made man or one who took the opportunity to better his life and thus his families which he did. I wonder why all this always turns to them or us why not elongate it and have to between the rank and file as well. To me all ranks from the top to the bottom or vice versa were only trying to do the best for their families and most of them then looked out for their neighbor.
How is the back?.

Hi Cliare,
I remember your dad while he was a lot older than myself at the time. I remember him as a real gent and I must say you realy have to admire someone like him who strived to do the best for his family. My mother still talks about your mum, I hope she is still in good health. Some years ago I met your brother when I went into the mobile phone shop to buy a new phone, we did not know each other at the time until I filled out the guarentee form and he noticed my last name and we got chatting. Geting back to the orignal post the reason I think you can look back and say you saw little difference, is probably down to your dad making sure that you were well grounded. We all have our own memories of growiing up in the curragh and most Iam sure are good.
All the best Claire

I am looking for Information on 32278 Pte J C Kidley Fire Station Curragh. He lived in No 7 Block Mc Dermott Bks. From 24 sept 1926 to 04 April 1929. But for the dedication and hard work of Tommy Sweeney I wouldn,t have a starting point or indeed any clue. Pte J Kidley boxed for Ireland in the 1924 Olympics. I need to know where and when was he born? If born abroad when did he move to Ireland and where did he live in Ireland. Where did he move to after 1929. Does he have any surviving relatives in Kildare.

Another Famous Resident from McDermott married Quarters: Sean Egan was born on 18 OCT, 1956 at the Curragh, Co. Kildare - his father James Egan, a native of Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny was in the Irish Army at the time and having served 21 years 271 days he retired in 1973 as a Company Quartermaster-Sergeant. His mother Claire Burke was from Longorchard, Templetuohy [near Thurles] and though young Sean Egan started his schooling in the Curragh Boys National School he also attended Templetuohy National School during the years when his father served with the United Nations in Cyprus. While attending school in Templetuohy, Sean and his mother stayed with his grandmother in Longorchard. He later went to the secondary school in the Curragh and in 1972 after his family moved to Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny he attended the Kilkenny Technical School, in Kilkenny City.At the Curragh, he quickly showed potential and determination to become the best hammer thrower in Ireland and on 23 JUL, 1978 21-year-old Sean Egan [Kildare AC], the big red-haired Army Private who threatened to do so a number of occasions that season, finally broke John Lawlor's 18-year-old Irish hammer record of 65.18 metres [213 feet 10 inches] with a throw of 65.56 metres [215 feet 1 inch] when he won his first Irish title at the 1978 Irish Track & Field Championships, watched by a crowd of 5,000 in Dublin. Later that year he moved to Darmstadt, Germany after the Army organised special training for him there. Sean improved his mark there the following year on 5 MAY, 1979 with 68.10m [223 feet 5 inches] at Darmstadt, Germany - and on 17 MAY, 1979 at the same venue he threw the hammer 68.76m [225 feet 7 inches]. At an International meeting on 19 AUG, 1979 in Dublin he reached 68.82m [225 feet 9 inches], and further improved his mark on 12 APR, 1980 in Darmstadt, Germany with 70.24m [230 feet 5 inches] in what was his first competitive appearance that year - this was 24cm better than the Olympic standard for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. His last Irish record on 1 MAY, 1980 in Frankfurt, Germany was 71.10m [233 feet 3 inches], and in all he won a total of 7 Irish hammer titles [1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1987] and 1 56lb weight for distance title [1992]. On 30 JUL, 1980 Sean Egan competed in the Moscow Olympics but did not get past the qualifying round. After the 1980 Olympics on 31 October having served 6 years Sean left the Army to take up employment in UCD - and joined Donore Harriers in Dublin early the following year. He presently works as a landscape contractor and is also a part-time wood turner, and lives in Kilmacud, Dublin - his aunt Mary Stapleton still lives in Templetuohy. In his school days in the Curragh he played the guitar in a band whose drummer was Niall Power who later played for Bob Geldof. The hammer weighs 7.26kg [16lb] - and the current Irish record holder for the hammer throw is Declan Hegarty, Dublin with a throw of 77.80m [255 feet 3 inches] in 1985.

Hi Discobolus
A great piece on Sean Egan. I always wondered what happened after he left the army. I remember him from my time living on O’Higgins Tce in the mid 1970’s, we as kids would watch in wonder at him trowing the hammer from across the Gyms Field. We would wait until he had finished trowing all the hammers and then eagerly run on to the filed and drag them back across the field to him. He was a gentle giant and had a good time for us, considering we were probably annoying him and ruining his concentration as we were sometimes to eager to run out to see who would be the first to retrieve the hammer !!
Thanks again and I do hope that he looks in on the forum sometime.
Matt

Hi Matt, Great read in relation to the married quarters. I was looking at the information yesterday, my mom lived in 40 Mc Donagh Tce from the 1950s to the 1970s. I noticed my grandfathers names was wrong on the list. 80752 T. Durney 40 Mc Donagh Tce.. This should read T.Drury. All the other information is correct. I was just wondering could someone change this for my mom. She will love reading through this & seeing all her old neighbours names. Many thanks for your help. Cb.

We lived in 2 Militia Terrace my dad was Joe Broderick Sergeant - I was about 3 at the time. What would those houses be listed under? Such a wonderful compilation of history, it is quite extraordinary. We lived beside the O'Carrolls and we visited them for years afterwards for holidays etc. cathy

Hi - I know the last post on this was a few years ago but can you tell me if the number next to the soldier's name is their service number? Irish Military can't seem to find the record with that number.....
Thanks.
