Hi Billy, A second chance, to strike that off your bucket list.
No chance of doing so with either Clarke or Ceannt bulldozer saw to that.
Hope to see you there, now if only we could organise an apple or two in the old orchard for you to swipe??
Hope you are well Billy

Andy, In the mid-Sixties when I was learning guitar I used go to Clarke Hall on Sunday afternoons and watch and listen to a group playing (I think they were called 'The Good Intentions', Pat O'Sullivan, Tommy Mills, Jimmy ----- and another guy on drums) I think there was a Hop after but I had to leave!! I was also at a Hop in McDermott Hall in aid of the Swimming Club organised by my brother Paul at which Donal Lunney played Mouthorgan and Bass Guitar in a beat group! Didn't I live, boy! Keeping well and feeling good, thanks, Billy P.S. See you Friday and don't be leading this innocent Officer's son astray!!!

Hi Billy,
That would be the late Jimmy Kearney (RIP) on drums. Attended a number of practice sessions with the lads and actually sang once with them - they haven't forgiven me yet. Unfortunately I never saw them play in public as I went away to work sometime later. Hope to make it on Friday - have thought the Wes was closed for years, is it being opened especially for the occasion?
Regards,
Johnd

Aha Billy you are Im afraid past the age of being led astray,
The winkle pickers are duly sharpened to a nice point as for the drainpipes that is another matter don't think this ass will fit so maybe the bell bottoms, the polo neck jumper also out, gwad decisions, decision's.
Wonder who is running the mineral bar and the cloak room?.
Young Griffen no Scoby not spinning the records, life stuff The talented Davey Usher and John Hanlon are supplying the music hope they don't bring the roof down or the church floor will fall first.
Wishing all who attend even for a short time, a blast from their past and better still helping a Curragh project.

Well the Hop took off and was a great success, well attended by many from the Curragh and surrounding areas. Davy Usher fingers dancing across the keyboards with John Hanlon giving his geeeee thaaar welly and Kathleen Whelan taking care of the vocal.
John D with his camera recording a bit of history, An awful lot of faces from my youth, good to know they are still casting shadows.
The poor floor never got a rest as there was much leaping and twirling by the dancers.
Billy you can tick that one off your bucket list.
Enjoyed chatting to many.
Well done to all involved in organising and running the event.

An enjoyable night was had by all and goes to show what chatting to old friends, tea, 7Up, a good band and memorable songs can do. As Andy mentions above fair play to the organisers for making a fine evening of it. Years ago when speaking to people outside the Curragh when I mentioned the Hops they were genuinely puzzled and had no idea what I was talking about. So wondering about the origin of the word I looked up Wikipedia and this is what I found: "Sock hop From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Question book-new.svg This article does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (December 2009) The sock hop was an informal sponsored dance at American high schools, typically held in the high school's own gym or cafeteria. The term sock hop came about because dancers were required to remove their hard-soled shoes to protect the varnished floor of the gymnasium. These hops were a cultural feature of the 1950s and early rock and roll. The music was usually records, sometimes presented by a disc jockey. Occasionally there were also live bands. Danny and the Juniors sang "At the Hop" in 1957 which named many popular dances and otherwise documented what happened at a hop. The term record hop is generally synonymous with sock hop. In subsequent decades, with the widespread popularity of sneakers and other types of indoors-only shoes, the practice of removing shoes was dropped and the term began to be applied more generally to any informal high school dance. The term caught on in England in the late 1970s during a British rockabilly revival, led by groups like The Stray Cats. Life Begins at the Hop, a song celebrating 'sock hops' became the first charting single for XTC". The Free Dictionary gives a shorter definition "Noun 1. record hop - an informal dance where popular music is played whereas dance (is) - a party for social dancing"
Photos of the night will be forwarded asap to Matt who might upload a selection. For anyone who missed it but wished they had been there, the organisers have hinted at a repeat in the New Year.
Regards,
johnd

Nice one John D . Have you any Photos to post on the site it would be nice to see Curragh folk of that era now on there walking sticks and Zimmer frames. (HaHa). Still jokeing aside they were great times , I have always said that Reverand Knowles did more for the youth of the Camp than the rest of the priests put together. (My own opinion only) Was Andy Brennan there flashing his Knashers for a Coke or a Pint . Good to hear it went well wish I had been there. Cheers for Sean Tracey.(Yorkshire U.K.)

Hi Sean,
Nice to see you on-line and making comments. I have sent a number of photos to Matt for posting on site. Indeed Andy was there and speaking of knashers viewer caution is advised - before viewing the picture(s) of Andy put on your shades (if you have delicate eyes, welding goggles might be a better bet)as the dazzling smile is at LASER level. There were special parking bays for zimmer frames and all in attendance had been advised to bring along their prescriptions in the even of a drugs bust by the local polis. Hopefully Matt will post photos soon.Hope all well with you and yours in York.
Regards,
Johnd

Hi all Just recovering from my exertions at the Hop, Just to let you know that the Good Intentions Band consisted of Paddy Sullivan, Guitar, Jimmy Kearney, Guitar, Tommy Mills Guitar and Snell Morrisey Drums, Jailer Bring me Water was there best number as they jazzed it up and made a good Rock Version of it. Sorry I had to leave the Hop early as I had to go and watch the Match, pity it clashed. It was great to see Billy Hyland and John D both looking well along with so many other past friends and faces, all that was missing was the smell of the Old Spice and the 4711. Perhaps it will be given another shot. The object of that gathering was to raise funds for the Curragh Pride Family Resource Centre,it's aim is to purchase a defibilator and train as many people in it's use. A truly worthy cause and of a great benefit to the community. Just keep an eye out for further fund raising ventures for this cause. Andy sorry I missed you, you obviously arrrived after I had left. Would loved to have had a chat. Hope you and all are well. I will keep you all in the loop if there are any further nights out of this sort. Regards and all the best to all Shadowers JoeyK
