Hi All On this day 90 years ago during the Irish Civil War a number of executions took place in the Curragh Camp Detention Barracks (Glasshouse). The execution was carried out by firing squad at 8.30 a.m. on the 19th December 1922 . It was the biggest single execution carried out in the Civil War. As with all anniversaries remembered lately, I think this incident should also be remembered as part of the Curragh and County Kildare past history. Matt:
I agree with you, they should be remembered. I recommend Murt Malone’s book, The Silence of the Glasshouse. This is a poignant reflection on the last days of the seven young men, particularly through the eyes of Stephen 'Chalky' White as he awaits his execution, while his mother, at her home in Kildare patiently waits for news of her son's fate. This is a book that brings to life the impact that the Civil War had on the Irish people and the divisions that left their small communities scarred for decades.
Murt served in the PA’s and did 5 tours in the Leb (covered in another well written book - The Lebanon Diaries). Murt is one of our own who reveals the truth of what happened with the execution.
