Hi Gene:
When I finished recruit training (17 years old), my first job was in McDonagh NCO's Mess. Declan (RIP) worked there. he took me under his wing, showed me the ropes. I could see he was a naturally leader. He was refined, focused and an awesome young man. I also fondly remember your Dad, Tommy (RIP) who worked tirelessly with the youth of the Camp (along with George Quinlan) training us in hurling and Gaelic football.
Your family touched many and made a difference to many others.
Best regards,
Brendan

:(Hi Brendan . It is only to-day i found out that Declan Stokes had passed on some time ago. I was so sorry to read about this i knew Declan all the way from infants to us leaving The Curragh Boys National he was a Diamond Geezer .As you so rightely put it his father Tommy, Lofty Dwyer Snr, and George Quinlan worked to try and keep St Josephs Hurling Club going, how many do you hear of now doing anything to help the young of The Curragh now.Once again i can only say how saddened and shocked to hear of Declans passing. Hi Gene Stokes, Well would you believe it, I was always wondering as to where you ended up, I hope you are keeping in good health as this leaves me. Crikey" I remember you and I knocking around together I was selling papers for Easons and going to the Tech at the same time, We got into some mischief in those days. I was only talking to another good friend of yours today, Gus Reilly I will pass on your regards. We had some crew in the Tech then after leaving National School. I ended up in the Army and done the 21 in Depot Engineers retired Ord Room Sgt. I am still working in the Camp with the Reserve Defence Forces Representative Association, The office is in Old Clarke Orderly Room. I do not know how long ago it is since you were home, the Camp has certainly changed but not for the better, all the old buildings are gone, they only knocked Easons in the past month or two. Nice to hear from you Gene.
Regards
Joey

Hi Jean Yes Andy Foley is still on the go, unfortunately he buried his wife some while back after a long illness. I meet Gus every day when we are paying homage to the nags, it's amazing how most of the Curragh people have a flutter, still have'nt struck it rich, but always trying. I still remember that Ouzo in Cyprus, we as engineers used it to thin the paint, it was an aquired taste, I personally loved the Large bottle of Keo out of the fridge, listening to the two of the best songs on the Jukebox Tom Jones Green Green Grass of home and Kaymos. Better stop as the young lads might think I am throwing breaks. Regards
Joey

Hi Guys, I see someone mentioned Ouzo. I still have an unopened bottle of it out in the garde shed that a mate of mine brought back from Cyprus . I think he was with the 10th Inf GP. I was wondering if it is still drinkable (if it ever was ) Never tasted it myself

We lived in Plunkett Qrs. during mid. 50s to early 60s. Our neighbour was the well known Jimmy (Corky) Walsh. All that was a long time ago and as such it is reasonable to suspect that with the demise of Plunkett M.Qrs. etc. nobody remembers us. We can be contacted at deecdeecon@aol.com. Con & Monica Dee (London, England) 02 July 2009 Can't help but notice that so many former Irish Soldiers are residing in the UK. Be aware that there exists in London a very active branch of Oglaig Naisiunta Na hEireann Teoranta. New members always more than welcome to join. See www.treatygaels.com for contact details.

Hi Con and Monica,
Welcome to the forum, can't say that I remember you, but don't fret someone out there will, indeed nearly all of the married quarters are gone. Jimmy (Corky) Welsh passed away at the begining of this year and his wife about six or seven years ago. Did Ned Poole live in Plunkett MQRS the same time as your family?
Cheers,
Rose.

Hi Drylander,
Re: OUZO
Would not recommend that you drink the bottle in your possession, could prove quite dangerous.
There were several accidents after sampling same, my Dad RIP was one of the casualties, he broke two ribs, got out the wrong side of the mess tent which was pitched near the edge of a steep hill ( wonder were they on the ouzo when they pitched it ). He reckoned (as he could not remember) he must have crawled out under the tent and hurtled down the hill. He said compared to Poteen it was like Rocket Fuel. Can't imagine what state it would be in now after all the years, if like wine it gets better with age probably has turned as lethal as weed killerl
Cheers,
Rose.

HI Rose
I never knew the Jimmy (Corky) Welsh passed away. Sad news, he was a great character and nice man. And I remembered him well when I was a child growing up on O'Higgins Tce. You were guaranteed to see him every day with his large bag of returnable bottles strapped on the back of his bike.
Nice Man God rest him.
Matt
