Hi I am looking for information on my Granduncle Jack Murphy, Cloewater, Ballon, Co Carlow who was in the army around about the time of the 30ths and 40ths and maybe before and after that. I would be grateful for any information you could find. Was wondering if it is possible to contact you by phone if that would make things easier, Its just I thought that it would be easier to find the info over the internet but am finding it hard.
Regards Tom Murphy

Hi Thomas,
there are Murphys mentioned from Ballon on the Carlow site run by Michael Brennan of Carlow, a bit of googling should get you into the site it is very user friendly and has a mine of information. If the Murphy you are looking for is listed then so is the army number. Regards Andy

Hi, I'm trying to find any information at all, about army life in Curragh from 1944-47. My father has Parkinson's disease. PD sufferers have short term memory but the long term the memory is good. he talks about his life Curragh camp but it is difficult to have a conversation before his mind wonders away again. I am writing my second book which is about PD and my Father is featured heavily in it. does anyone know of the name Patrick Miller (Paddy) from Dominick Street. when I mention Peter Mcnamara, he said he was in the army with him. I have no photos of my father when he was young and it would be nice to be able to see one of him. I don't know where to begin looking for information of his time in the army. I live in Yorkshire. cheers

Hi Tanya, Welcome to the Forum, re your query I think you'll find Matt has covered most lines of enquiry on the site. First of all why not take a look at Curragh Historical Articles section and you'll find a wonderful treasure trove of original diary extracts which includes poems, sketches, drawings and photos of the men interned there at the time. I'm sure your dad will love it. Look under the threads Rath Camp Silvester Delahunt. and then Rath Camp 1921 Edward Flanagan, genuine pieces of Irish/Curragh history. Don't know if this will be of any help to you but if you contact nationalarchives.gov.uk you can search for documents no.WO35/143 and WO35/144 both of which should supply you with the alphabetical lists of internees at the Curragh and Arbour Hill up to 1923. Best of luck in your search, please let us know if you have any success MaryF

Hi Tanya,
I've just finished doing much the same kind of project on my granda as a present for my da on his 80th birthday.
If your granda applied for an Old IRA pension for service in the War of Independence, they'll have records of his application at: Veterans Administration Section Dept of Defence Renmore Galway. You need to apply in writing and they've a backlog of about a year, but they will at least reply and say whether they have a file reference for him, that's what happened with me anyway.
You could also check the witness statements held by the Bureau of Military History in Cathal Brugha barracks in Dublin (copies are in the National Archives), he may be mentioned in some of the statements given by Roscommon veterans.

Thank you so much Kieran can I ask a couple of questions please Did you go to the archives yourself and if so did you have any issue gaining access as all I have seen so far suggests that anyone wanting to see the archives would need to prove they are related to the person they are searching on. My Grandfather definitely had a pension and this then passed to my Grandmother when he passed away. The one good thing I have found over the last number of days is that in 1950 even though he himself was not interviewed alongside the surviving members of his group/battalion/regiment (not sure of the official term) were asked to list their members according to rank and include service numbers this was then sent to Cathal Brugha Barracks and each member received a copy of the document. Unfortunately the copy my Grandfather received we have just discovered has been misplaced/lost which has prompted my search for info for my Father.
Thank you again Kieran

Hi Tanya, I think you've struck gold with Keirans information as he's been down the road and will be able to answer all your questions and point you in the right direction. I came across those document nos years ago while researching something else. It was on that that site on documentsonline, but have had a look and can't locate them now I seem to remember that you would have had to visit the archives to view them!! Don't know if its any use to you but maybe if you try giving them a ring, (because if your anyway like myself I take ages to find stuff online and then never can remember where it was) their no is 00442088763444. But Kierans info is definitely more up to date than mine. Good luck MaryF

Hi MaryF Thank you so much for that I am such a Blonde sometimes I forgot to let you know that I finally made sense of that website and what it is, is that you can't view the documents online just the summaries (which I found) however if you sign up to their site you can order copies of the documents. There is a charge but if you just want straight forward copies the price starts at 29p per page and upwards from there they will also send you an estimate of cost before you confirm the order so if it is too expensive you can give the specific details you are looking for and get copies of the relevant pages only. Hope that is of some use to those searching for info. Thanking You again Tanya
