Growing up in the camp one of the things I looked forward to was
The visit of The carnival . What brought this thread on I suppose was my Christmas Present, I must have been good during the year Santa brought a IPOD
my pastime is listening to music mainly from the 1960s,1970,and early 1980s as I used to moonlight as a DJ in my past life, something Joey and I Have in common I suppose. While I was transferring my music from my PC to the IPOD I was listening to some of the oldies it reminded the time the carnival that used to set
up in the market square.
I’m sure that’s were IKEA got the idea for the flat pack furniture everything
arrived on trucks flat packed except the bumper cars of course . If you noticed there arrival on your way to school you could’ent concentrate all day thinking How you were going to raise the funds I suppose I used to drive my mother nearly mad asking for money for the carnival , the only options were, heading for the golf links caddying or collecting mineral bottles, or as a last resort a technique
Myself and the lads perfected it entailed keeping an close eye on bunch of recruits or cadets ,( come to think of it Joey or Andy could have been in training
Then ) when they headed for the bumpers or swinging boats there were always one who would have a empty seat , so without shame ask if we could get in, on one occasion it back fired literally on one poor divel I was in the swinging boats and being a lot lighter than this chap almost became airborne and got sick over him funny he never let me in after that.
The bumper cars seemed to always have a greasy chap in a vest with a cigarette
Hanging out of the side of his mouth standing on the back of the cars fixing the flat piece of metal that caused the sparks ,or to redirect you if you were in a jam.
Just listening to songs like “young girl by Gary Puckett” or even some of ABBAs earlier songs transports me back . that’s the best about music it can conger up all sorts of memories good and sad. The sound of the music echoing around and all the colored lights of the chair planes, My brother got a job with the carnival in the air rifle rang, alas it was short lived a girl who fancied him shot him in the backside and the pellet had to be dug out later in hospital ouch. ;D The circus had
Not the same appeal for me you had a battle of wits with the circus staff one of the lads would lift the tarpolium and you would worm yourself under hoping and praying there was not a size 10 waiting the other side more than often their would be give me the carnival any day , indeed happy days.
