;DIn this day and age of food hygine and health and safety, who out there remembers Orfords Butchers on the Market Square . It was run for years by a man called Peter Hayde from Newbridge, the thing that stands out in my mind about him was that he always had a John Players Navy Cut cigarette in his mouth even when cutting or sawing meat the ash never fell off on to the meat i used to stand there waiting but it never happened. I also remember Mickey Collins who in the summer would put the bags of vegitables out side the shop in the Summer and every dog around use to come and piss on the sacks. What about him putting a Penny worth of Bon Bons in alittle cone made from old Newspapers given to him by his costomers. We are all alive to day and healthy. any comments. curraghlad. ;D

Do you remember Biddy Dobbins shop. I would spend hours looking at the stuff in the window, trying to decide what to buy. Eventually she would pull back the curtain and knock on the window to get rid of you.You would then go up to Mc Ateers and spend your money there. I was terrified every time I went into Dobbin's. You had to know exactly what you wanted, or else she would ge trid of you. Also, did anybody else spend half their childhood running up the wings of the Marian Shrine?.

Hi all I have fond memories of biddy and aggie dobbins,They did hate to see all us coming and hanging around out side their window but if you went in to spend your few pennies it was a different story. My favourite sweets to buy were Rainbow drops,Pink panter bars, Black jacks, and they hated it if you looked for 20 or more penny sweets, they would always give you out the ones you hated. If you had enough money you had the jars of sweets to choose from bon bons, bulls eyes, clove rocks, all rolled up in an old news paper. You were never allowed to open the fridge and pick out your own ice pop you had to know which one you wanted and they would get it for you the ones i loved were gollie bars and the orange grove ice pop. Then off you go down to the picture house with your stash of sweets hidden in your pocket because they did not like to see you coming in and not buying anything from them you might be lucky and have enough for a bottle of coke.
