With all the bad news round & about I thought we could engage in a little gossip and share some of the good thing that are happening in OUR lives and 'n our Lifetime this Christmas 2009. On a world wide scale it's been announced that Pope Paul 11 is one step closer to Sainthood. And on a personal level, today we watched with pride as our little granddaughter played Mary in her Nursery Nativity play.

Hi Kentgal, What a lovely thought and a wonderful thread because amidst all the global doom and gloom, if we actually stop, look and listen we will find that true happiness and family fun doesn't cost anything. We forum members know that better than anybody else. we're on here reminising about how good our Christmas's were when money was tight, but we have fantastic memories from those lean times that we still hold dear to us today and if given the option how many of us would like to step back in time and spend this Christmas in our old homes with the family as we were then and all the neighbours in place as well knowing what we do now! What a party we would have, wishful thinking? Yes but why not life was so good and simple then why can't it return to the same ethos now. We've seen what greed has done so lets hope we can now get back to basics and appreciate what we've got as the saying goes money isn't everything and that is oh so true. Bye for now MaryF

Hi Mary and Kentgal, I agree with you Mary it is a lovely thought. And yes I would love to go back all those years ago celebrating Christmas with all my family and friends in the Curragh, money didn't mean anything because we never had it but we were always happy. On another note I think Pope John Paul 11 deserves a Sainthood. I just absolutely loved that pope, myself and my brother went to Rome for Easter the year he died (R.I.P) sadly we could only see him from a distance as he was too ill to come down and say Mass, but it was one of the best experiences of my life, one I will never forget. Cheers Mary C

Hi Mary Snow 2' under & still falling outside. Like yourself I'm on the old roster too this Christmas & New Year. Only snag is I'm Community & dreading the slippery slidey prospect of driving round the unsalted inner city slushy roads. However I try to remind myself that 'tis luxury compared to the shivering folk who litter our byways & avenues in cardboard boxes. Which brings me to an occurence which happened last week, one to warm the thingyles of ones heart, that there are some good people still in existance.
At Christmas time we provide toy & food parcels to the needy on our rounds, pre ordered & provided by various agencies. Alas there are always some who fall outside the qualifying net, so each of us do the best we can in these cases.
A colleague & I were collecting empty boxes from the super-market & hidden behind our trollys of food we approached the checkout, me first in the queue. While unloading mine, Lucy, behind me was chatting to a couple behind her, curious about all the boxes etc. At the end of our transactions the next thing we knew the man has jumped the queue & hands his card to the cashire paying for the entire lot. His only comment was Happy Christmas. So surprised, never expected & will never be forgotten.

Hi Kentgal, How lovely was that and I be most unexpected, there are still some good people in this world, and what a wonderful job you do and it must be quite sad at times, there are so many people who are worse off than us, we really don't know how lucky we all are. As for the snow there was another 3 inches last night in Caterham, but not sure about tonight will have to wait till morning and see if I can get home. Cheers and keep up the good work. Mary C
