Hi Joey, Great photo of the lads and didn't they all look smart in their brown sandals and white socks and pullovers[gansies]. What we'd call smart casual today, not a tracksuit or designer trainer in sight! long before they'd been invented. I recognised most of the faces Kenneth Brannigan, Hugh and Dessie McLoughlin, the O'Neills,Alfie Moran, Sean Troy,Billy O, Brien and Liam Heffernan Cant say I remember the Neenans where did they live? and who is the one with the curly blond hair top right hand corner Seany? There were quite a few sets of brothers as caddies wasn,t there? Was it a special tournament because I was just wondering what the trophy Billy Neenan was holding was for? Another blast from the past well done Joey keep them coming Bye for now MaryF

Hi Kathy Mary and all. The Blondy Chap on the top left is Seany O Brien and the Neenans lived in Mc Donagh, Katy would have known them very well as they lived very near them incidentially kathy did you have a brother called Christy? if so tell him I was asking for him we knocked around together on the Camp., That's not a trophy Billy is wearing it's a hat probably a trophy from one of the visiting yanks at the time. They were good old days and sometimes the only means of a pack of fags or a visit to the Pictures or even the price of a loaf, I did a bit of caddying myself and would have been in the following group of caddies after the lads in the photos, Mary you did very well remembering the lads. The going rate when I was caddying was 2d/6p or the preverbiable half dollar. I caddied for the likes of Phil Lawlor, Sylvester Carr,Paddy Powell, Old Mr Maginn (Eoin) Pats father),and many more. Loved the summer days and all that fresh air. Another means of a few bob was in looking for Golf Balls, usually bought off you by Phil Lawlor or Joan Mc Ateer, believe it or not. Incidentially when I left the Army I ended up on the Golf Club doing green keeping for a couple of years. I personally know every blade of grass there.
Regards to you all
Joey

Hi Kathyo I am delighted to hear that your Brother Christy is still going strong, he was a great character, and had a great laugh, we were always messing about, and when we made the raids on the Fruit Farm, and he ,when up a tree would often throw an apple bouncing it off someones neck, and he grinning away like a cheshire cat. I thing we used to cally Billy Neenan "Spinks", if memory served me right. Regards to you and Christy and to all.

Hi Joey and all! Like you said Joey 2d/6p or the half dollar at that time was a loaf of bread or ten fags depending on circumstances! Everytime we walked out from the camp to Donnelly's hollow or as in my case to my granny and grandads house in Kilcullen every Sunday afternoon ,we walked through the plantations and on the links looking for stray golf ball sometimes we even intercepted them in the middle of a game and resold them to their rightful owners to make sure they could finish their game! Got to admit was really surprised that Joan Mc Ateer used to buy the stray golf balls off of you! But then I have a strong image of her as being a very keen golfer, so maybe she was only buying back her own golf balls and allowing us kids to earn some money in the process. Might sound stupid but I always thought of Joan Mc Ateer as a lady thats the way she always carried herself [refined, softly spoken, and caring] and as a girl growing up on the Curragh she was one person I wanted to emulate and be like. regards to all MaryF Take care MaryF

Hi Kathyo,
When you bumped into Billy Neenan did he say how Bernadette was, I think she had some heart problems if memory serves me right. Lizzie Goff is related to Neenans and that was how she met Denis her husband, she came up to the Camp to spend a holiday with them.

Hi All, Yes, remember caddying on the Curragh every Thursday afternoon, along with Murt Quinlan and my brother Sean. We caddied for Pat Maginn (Sean), Aga Sylvester Carr (Murt) and Joe McTernan (me). All for the princely sum of 50p, half an apple from Pat (who could split them into two equal parts off his thigh) and if it was very hot, a bottle of Mahon's best lemonade (bottled in Kildare) at the end. Pat owned the three-shop Maginn chain in the camp, Aga the Picture House and Joe McTernan's pubs and restaurants in Kilcullen and Newbridge (remember his Hero Burgers?). There was a 'caddy master' there in my early caddy career, but I can't remember his name (up to you Joey), and of course Phil Lawlor, the pro since auld God's time. I'd love a bottle of Mahon's now!

Hi Sham and all. Caddy Masters I remember were, Jack Nagle and Pop O Neill (Charlie's Dad). We paid a levy (that dreaded word) of 6p for the privelage of getting out with a golfer. Imagine you received 50p and I a measly half dollar. Some of the bags weighed a ton. In reply to Rose's question that was Robert Mc Auliffe in the photo of the caddies. They lived in K Lines, the only girl I remember was Denise. Robbie was actually in my class in the 50s right up to 63 and I do remember something of their dad dying suddenly. Also remembering the Casey's Sean Casey, was also in my class , the Casey's were a lovely family and I believe their Mother died very young.(Donal was another of the lads), only remember one of the girls named, (Ann). Regards
Joey
