Hi all , Now that things are a bit quite on the forum , If anybody might be in the Tipperary area on their travels during the "gathering " or maybe holidaying next year, a visit to the memorial arch in St Vincents Court where the names of Irish service men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of Peace , Freedom, Worldwide ,, is engraved in the stone arch, This arch was dedicated on Sept 30th 2005, by Mrs Mary McAleese the President of Ireland, and was attended by members of the P,D,F and O,N,E, and many many Tipperary people, A good place to sit and quitely remember, A cuple of photos taken on the day of dedication, Ex Tpr Kelly Ex 1st Armd Sqdn,

THIS DAY, 50 YEARS AGO. (My letter to Brendan 22/11 2013), On this day, 50 years ago, the 22/11/1963. I was a young junior N.C.O. with the 2nd Infantry Group as part of the Irish (U.N.) peace mission in the Congo, Having returned from a three-day patrol in the jungle south of Kolwezi, I was on downtime (resting). In the evening as it got a little cooler, I went to my makeshift photographic darkroom, which was located in the main (radio shack) to develop some photographs. As I worked on developing some of the pictures taken on patrol, I was contemplating as to whether anyone would remember that; tomorrow would be my 21st birthday. It might even warrant some simple celebration amongst my immediate comrades. We didn’t have any post now for nearly two weeks, maybe tomorrow; there would be a letter or card from Ireland to mark my coming of age! All these year later, I can’t recall what time it was when I finished up in the darkroom, I know it was very late. As I passed through the operations room, the Canadian radio operator on duty called me over to look at something coming in on the telex printer. Using just the letter x, the sender had sent a portrait image of President Kennedy. As the picture gradually evolved, I marvelled at this new technology. It was only when the striking likeness was complete, that the written message explained the reason, it had been sent from Canada. We like the entire world at large, had learned of the assassination of J.F.K. So! My 21st birthday came and went unnoticed or remembered in the shadow of the disbelief and speculation that surrounded the historically momentous event. I had left the radio room having had the telex checked and definitively confirmed, to spread the startling news to those still awake or on sentry duty. The few shortwave radios in the camp were soon bellowing out the details from eyewitnesses in Dallas. With a simple, personal emotion, I was like most everyone else, very moved concerning the president of the U.S. but to this day, I mourn the fact that I never did get to celebrate my 21st birthday. Ironic! Is how I would describe, having had a present of a ‘Smartphone’ sent to me from Ireland by a very dear family member and wonderful friend. It might be 50years in the making, but I feel as if NOW I celebrate that long obscured birthday.

Post by Sinead Doherty on Nov 26, 2013 0:29:55 GMT
Hi,
My Name is Sinead Doherty. My dad served in the Irish army (I think he was in the 3rd Battalion). He always spoke of the “reds” (army term). Coincidentally he was always a Liverpool supporter. Mum and Dad moved to Liverpool in 1982. He told us that he was annoyed with the way things were back then. I was too young to understand what he was saying. The older I get, I’ve always wondered what it would have like growing up in Ireland and the Curragh.
I hope I don’t annoy anyone. Any advice or guidance is appreciated.
Sinead

Hi Ned and all others hope you all got what you deserved from Santa, now there is a dude who can remember after over 50 years he remembered he owed me a roll of caps for my six shooter.
Much scoffing of fodder washed down by copious amounts of that stuff, getting together with family and friends rambling down memory lane lots of laughter was a good Christmas, hope your was too.
Also a sad time remembering those no longer with us and those who could not get home for one reason or another.
I know it is a bit crazy in the build up but over all on the scale of yes / no it comes out on the + side.
So I will get in early with this to all
to all who post or even browse on this forum be they members, guests or whatever I wish you Good fortune for the coming year.
Happy New Year.
Andy
