As young boys and girls, I remember when new clothes were needed at least twice a year and Mickey Sloane as I recall the name he could take one look at us chisslers and not only supply the following week but it would fit, (he should have been an undertaker). The next man to take over this task as we got older was that great man Hal (R.I.P) He clothed us , drove us to dances and if you were stuck would advance the entrance fee. When in the army I remember lads locking them selfs in lockers to avoid Hal , But I have to say he was a great man.

Hi Andy. I remember Hal Conway very well and bought a pair of twist boots from him.I also bought a brown made to measure suit from him.I had the suit just a couple of weeks when it was nicked by an NCO who deserted and went to London. The reason he deserted because he nicked a carton of cigarettes on someone just back from the Congo. He was court marshaled and found guilty and was going to lose his newly acquired strips. The story doesn't end there i came to London and was having a drink with my wife in a PH in Balham. When the ex soldier whom i mention above approached and asked if i remembered him i of course said yes .We had a couple of drinks together with him and his girl friend. Well i thought everyone deserves another chance and he seemed okay so i didn't mention the suit. I met him a few times after that and he stayed in my house one night after we had a few drinks.Well after he left i found he had helped himself to some of the whiskey which i keep for friends as i don't drink spirits. The next day i had a call from his girlfriend saying he had been arrested nicking a coat containing a wallet. She asked if i would go bail i said they can throw the key away.I never met him since and the lesson learned a leopard never changes his spots.Do you know i was still paying Hal 6 months after that suit was stolen. Cheers Anthony

Hi, Anthony/your right about the leopard and its spots, talking of spots heres one some body else may remember, Simon Doyle and Billy McGrath were cooks in the old cookhouse in Ceannt where the Min range is now or was, any way they had this white dog who was tained to deliver a package of grub to one of their homes. An orderly Officer took exception to the dog and ordered them to get rid of it, so they painted black spots on the dog and continued as before . Also I remember seeing atopic from KathleenMcGrath here but am unable tofind it many is the happy time I spent in the McGrath Home as well as the Doyle home and Mary Dolans (Byrne) to name a few at the moment . have to stop now the typing finger worn out cheers for now and regards to all members and guests
