Hi All Horse Racing Fans . The two horses were now swinging down the hill And Arkle galloped along in the big horses wake as the two poured down the hill. At the second last Mill House touched down just in front and swinging into the straight for the short run to the final fence. Robinson brought the whip into play and Mill house gave all he had but at the last fence Taaffe urged his horse on and they jumped two lenghts clear of Mill House.Mill House doggedly hung on like the Champion he was closing to within one lenght before Arkle put in a final flourish to win the race by five lenghts. The Irish had won the day and the black stuff tasted that much better. Memories of the Great Arkle in the 60s. There is a song about the two horses i have it on an old record and was wondering if any of you have ever heard it. Cheers Anthony.

Hi Anthony, I remember that song. A few lines stick in my memory, such as My God he has us beaten, what can we English say, The ground was wrong, the distance long, too early in the day.

Hi Drylander. Yeah you got it that song was a good crack. I was so sad the day Arkle limped off at Kempton it was the end of an era in racing history. It was the King George V1 chase in 1966 and i watched it on tele in Slough . Good Anthony.

Hi Anthony, I don't usually have any interest in horse racing, but I remember reading about a jockey in a book about the Curragh. It was something about "Throwing " a race. His name I think was Horace Pink. Do you know anything about this story. I think that book is still in the house somewhere. I must search for it.

Hi Drylander. I still don't know or cant find out anything about Horace Pink as a Jockey. What i did find out is the following information.
The First official racing to take place at the Curragh was 1741. In the 1760s a Jockey Club was set up in a Coffee House in kildare which evolved into the present day regulatory body. Cheers Anthony. Hi Kentgal where are you this is your field.??

Hi Anthony, I found that book. It's title is "The Curragh", A Lifetime of Memories, published by a Curragh local history group. As far as I can remember I bought it at an open day in the Curragh on the 75th Anniversary of the 3rd Bn. Thats the last time I was in the camp, about 12 years ago. I don't know if I should name names here but if you like I will scan the article and PM it you and you can decide if it ok to post it. The (Alleged ) incident happened at the Curragh meeting of Sept. 16th 1936 during the Harehill Plate in which Horace Pink rode Another Creek, owned by Mr. W. B. Moran, trained by Mr. J. Staunton. Start racking your brains on that one. There are some fantastic stories and photos in this book. The price on the back cover is £7.95 (Sterling )
