Hiya Folks. Just to let you all know i met Con Dee who was in plunkett & Connolly in the 60s. We had the meet at a little Cafe in Morden Surrey. We had a latte and tea and a good chat about the people we both knew who were stationed in the Curragh Camp in the 60s and events that took place at the time, He has since kindly E-Mailed some photos which he took recently in the Curragh . The coffee was good and the crack mighty . Cheerio Anthony.

Hi Anthony
That was good to read, as I have said before the whole purpose of the site is to provide people with a platform to share their experience of life on the Curragh Camp. If that was a life as a Soldier in the Army of as a civilian growing up on a Military Camp it is always satisfying to me as the host to see stories such as yours where you probably would never meet up with these old comrades. If you are ever back over this way please do let me know and we can arrange to have a look around the camp.
All the best
Matt

Hi Folks. The memory has just gone batty. During my time in Elizabeth ville some of our troops were billeted in villas in a tree lined avenue near King Leopold Farm.In the daytime the Bats would hang by their feet asleep on tree branches about 30ft high. The young Congeles boys would use homemade catapults to hit and dislodge the bats and kill them on the ground.I have never seen bats as large as these and the wing span was amazing. The young lads would string them up and take them away maybe to make bat soup, slurp never tried myself. When i inspected them i though they might be vampire bats but i guess i seen too many of those Dracula films. I do believe that they eat fruit and pollinate fruit such as bananas. Cheerio.

Hiya Folks. I thought i struck it rich during my tour of duty with the 37Th batt in Elizabethville. We had to dig trenches outside our villas so we could take cover and mount our weapons in them in case of attack. The area to be dug was marked out by the Sergeant in charge and a couple of us started to dig out the trench. We had reached a depth of about 3ft and we were told to go deeper and then we started to unearth what we thought were huge diamonds.I said hi Sarge we are all rich he came had a look and said its only quartz. The Sergeants name was the Battler McDonald and he had a good laugh about that .We finish the trench after much sweat none the richer but it looked good when we roofed it with long grass.
Cheers Anthony

Very pleased to have in recent months made contact with afcmoore. Although in the Curragh around the same period, we did not know each other but have since established a very close friendship. We meet on a fairly regular basis at a Cafe near Morden LT station in London where we chat about our time in in the PDF and the people we both knew in the Camp and surrounding area. Anyone else care to join us for tea and the craic down Morden way??

Hi all, I agree with Limericks and Anthony's idea for any of us residents or soldiers either visiting or living in the London area to meet up. I thing its great.I live in SW2.only a few stops away and I'm sure there must be a few more of us about who could make it.I'm sure the craic would be good. So as you kindly offered the tea I'll happily get the cakes in! Mary F.
