Re:Memories Late 50s 60s by AFCMoore Hi ants/geraldine The 10k march that ger refers to is part of the required annual fitness test, after they do a required number of push ups and sit ups they then proceed to do a 2mile run. and then are required to do within 10 weeks the 10k walk with pack complete with water spare boots and wet gear, before this test was introduced we had to do a 15 mile xcountry march around the Curragh edge over undulating ground, only recruits do a route march now and cadets also whom march back from the Glen l with full gear, the ARW Selection course do a 36 mile road march at the end of their course, plenty of blisters even with better equipment and footwear. But to fail your annual fitness test you are put on a 3 month fitness program and then retested, then if failed 3 more months then retest then you are in trouble if you do not pass, possible sanctions from your O/C or even discharge. one coming back off a long term injury is given every chance to recover and get ready for their test and one can do a swim/static bike test as part of the test in lieu of the run.every chance is given to the person to pass and as ger says it is very hard to fail the test, one of my sayings was about the soldier when i was in the Army was " YOU ARE PAID TO BE FIT ARE YOU FIT TO BE PAID" Bye for now Johnny

Hi Johnny. To run the 2 miles in under 12 minutes is not bad i'm sure that would be on level ground. 10K route march easy peasy . the sit ups and press ups no problem ah i think I'll join up again. 36 miles now that's a fair step and fair play to them that do it,I suppose a few fall by the wayside. The Cadets always trained hard with no quarter given. They look soft when they first join up but after 6 months they start to look the part. I think it used to take was it 5 yrs to become an officer one bar lt or am i mistaken? Going back to our 14 mile route march we had tears and complains. The NCO told them get a grip or ship out. I remember the full pack and the steel helmets and it was roasting hot day. The faces of the lads was coated white from the salt of their sweat Phew. As the saying goes when the going gets tough the tough get going. By the way we didn't put up a bad show at the MKS ground how lucky were they. Cheers ;D Ant.

Re:Memories Late 50s 60s by AFCMoore Hi Ant It now takes 2 years for a cadet to be commissioned and they start off as young raw and eager Lts and are going to change the world. yes indeed they get it tough but not as hard as the old days, but with the new clothing and kit it is easier to cover longer distances in runs and long treks over the mountains, with good training it gets easy to do, i did not get a chance to lok at the FA Cup game on sunday last but it was a good game overall and the enemy were lucky to get a win. getting ready for the visit up to City on Sunday for a lunch time kick off. if the Reds defend they way that they are at present it will be a good Xmas for the blue side of Manchester. bye for now Johnny

Hi Ants a good result yesterday coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 a good result, i bet you were singing. In answer to your query reference to the issued housewife. contents were as follows:small roll of grey wool for darning the grey socks. black green/beige treads for the replacing of lost buttons etc, a set of darning needles in a black paper folder 4/5 needles buttons for the shirt of various sizes, they were held in a beige/light green cloth holder which folded over itself and was held in place by tying a string around the house wife which was attached to it. the soldiers of today are issued with a different house wife but the contents are similar to the one we were issued with. holder is of a plastic type of holdall like a wallet. bye for now johnny

Hi all, The mention of the 'housewife' kit brought back memories of my Mam darning those grey socks designed to wear out the skin from the hardiest of feet. I also remember my Dad had a first aid bandage which fitted into the inside of the tunic. For some reason it had a yellow pad and a bandage coloured like ladies tights. I wonder is such a kit supplied to todays army? My Dad used it for shining his brass buttons. Regards JJ

Good Morrow J.J.
Yep ye old Field Dressing a bit like the magic sponge used in football match's could sort any type of wound, it was sterile before doing the boots and brass's, big pad was to staunch the blood from the wound and the rest to keep it on. Still using it when I left and was checked for when going on Duty. Your dad must have had a couple of spares in order to use his as a shammy. Did the same myself on more then one occasion.

RE , Field dressing! I seem to remember being stopped a few times by the "P,A"s checking to make sure I was carrying my field dressing in the pocket which was inside of my tunic, I believe I was once turned back at the check point because I didnt have one with me, I wonder if my friend Con Dee could throw any light if there, was an order in force in those days re field dressings, Ex Tpr Kelly, Ex 1St Armd Sqdn
