I don't remember two butchers either. But do remember Mick Conlans and Dermot Phelan's. There were two butchers on the market square one was Orfords run by Peter Hade who always had a fag in his mouth with an inch of ash hanging off it which never fell off, no smoking ban in those days (60's) or worry about health and safety, next door was conlans very posh they had a girl in a glass booth who dealt with the money. The chemists was Dermott Feeleys not Phelans and if you collected photographs or the like he would sometimes give you a sugar barley stick.

Hi Liz Did you know Sergent Georgie ONeill he trained me in McDonnagh Bks 1961. I met his son many years ago in London he use to sell the sunday papers in the dining hall at Plunkett Bks. Hal Stacey worked as dining hall Sergent in Plunkett Bks.Did you go to the dance hall down the hill near the post office. Tony Moore. Hi Tony, Sorry bit before my time i'm afraid so don't recognise the names perhaps someone else on the forum will remember?? Sgt George O'Neill lived in McDonagh and was a sergeant in the depot, the son you met in England was probably Paul who has since passed away R.I.P. Went to a few hops in the Wes hall but the dances there were very early on I think late fifties to early sixties, there were irish dancing classes held there on saturdays, Paddy Keane R.I.P. supplied the music he used to live in Clarke.

Does anyone remember Miss Carolan she used to attend Mass, devotions etc., in the Camp, she used to have about a half dozen rosary beads around her neck and loads of medals pinned to her coat. A gentle old lady always wore a soft brown hat if I remember correctly. Think she lived around Ballysax, Cut Bush area. Also there was Danny Dunne who used to sit in the post office all day in the corner on the forum. Paddy the postman anyone remember running up to meet him on a friday for the Cheque, you were always certain of a letter for your Ma on a Friday.

Rose5,
Forgive me I didn’t get your name. I must say you have unearthed memories that were buried deep under rocks in my head. I now remember nearly everything you've posted over the last few days. Names, places and characters.
It's great to have you on the forum. Between you and Tommy we're all set to regurgitate an accurate history of the Camp.
Brendan

We always called it just Dermot's. Hope your getting as much enjoyment from this website as I am

;D Hi All . I remember Miss Carlon well ,my late mother knew her as my mother grew up around the Ballysax and Cut Bush Area as for Paddy the Postman i understand that he lived to good age manys the pint ihad with him in the Rising Sun snug he was a mine of information about the Curragh. Paul O Neill i was in the Curragh Primary with he was always a real nice bloke then, i used to meet him out in the Mess at socials with his wife years later and he was still a nice bloke then he never changed. His death was a shock to a lot of people myself included . Has Ceant Gal posted the answer to her Trivia question yet. Cheers for now Sean Tracey ;D

Brendan Hi Brendan its Rose Smith here take it you are from Ceannt Sean, Michael and Kathleen to name but a few brother do you or anyone else remember Mr. Buckley he used to come into the camp with a horse and cart with milk in churns and the women would go out to him with jugs and buy it. I think Darlings always got their milk from him he stopped there every day he was hardly getting his hair cut that often. There were two sisters used to spend a lot of time in the Church Bessie and Agnes O'Brien I think again from Ballysax area myself and Jean Walker used to go up and talk to them they were always on about having sixpence for a cup of tea in the Wes on the way home.

Hi Kentgal, Where was McDermot Hut mayb its the name that has thrown me is it the boxing/bingo hall Tommy H Hi Tommy could not figure out who Hetheringtons McDonagh Tce were but when I saw who your Grandparents were I clicked in the fifties and very early sixties there were dances held in McDermott Hut on Tuesday nights and it was then known as "the sweat Box" my Mam's younger sister used to go there.
