Hi Ger, Reference the swimming pool, it was johnny who looked after the pool. God be with the Galas, great sport especially when we were allowed in after the Competitions , I think then, that it was the only time the lads were allowed in the pool with the girls. The pool has great memories for myself particulary, when the Diving Board was in use off the deep end, when the Diving board was taken out, we would manage to dive off the seating, of course you did'nt get caught.
Regards to all

An old photograph of The Curragh Pool taken in the 1950's and sent to me by Paul Brennan. Many a happy swimming session I remember there. And trying to get past the lifeguards to the deep end as a nipper. Matt

Hi Matt, Thats exactly as I remember the Old Pool, non of the comforts that they have now, it was so cold therein that there were Polar Bears swimming up the Deep end, when I was a kid.

hi matt my god that photo brings it all back its exactly how i remember the pool even the seats. was not a great swimmer so spent a lot of time up the shallow end there was times when i got out of the pool and the top of my[ togs] were still bone dry. my kids are cringing at the word togs, as they only know them as bikini or swimsuits how times have changed.

Hi to one and all just having a peek at the photo of the pool and your comments re the same. any of ye remember John Gillman, I have a vivid memory of watching him and trying to emulate his feat, he could swim under water two and a half lengths of the pool correct me if Im wrong about the distance I did get the length but was no good on the turn great old days in the queue out side the pool, might be let in and might not . the galas were truly a great event good times.then down to the boiler house with its smell of briquette ash followed by a balancing act on the long pipe heading towards Brownstown, Enjoy the holliers all Andy

;D Hi Andy. Reading your posting brings back a lot of memories. I still remember the smell and the pipe going out to brownstown, great times and happy carefree days. We are not going on any hols ourselves as we have taken over a pub in a large seaside town in east Yorkshire and are in the proscess of getting it up and running. Should be no problem as my wife is an old hand at this she has been in pub trade since she was Fourteen although she London born and bread all her pub Goveners all her life were always Irish. So she is nearley more Irish than i am, anyway keep posting your memories as this one you did took me home in my mind . All the best to you and your brothers and family . Cheers Sean Tracey

Hi Matt, I can't seem to get the image of the swimming pool up, I must be doing something wrong, maybe you could talk me through how to get it. Mary B Matt

Hi Mary I don't know what is going on with your internet browser and not displaying the photograph. Do you have problems with other site photographs ? Try this link: www.curragh.info/images/brennan/brennan%20(16).jpgThanks for that Matt, got the picture ok, it certainly brings back a lot of memories, running home after school, to get your swimming gear, the lovely summers we had then. I can't remember all the instructors, but Pete Madden, Mr Gillespie, are two that come to mind. We were lucky on the Curragh to have such a fine facility Mary Matt
