The Curragh Families Hospital Monument
At the most recent meeting of The Curragh Local History Group, it was proposed that a permanent monument to commemorate The Curragh Families Hospital which was closed in 1984. Built by the British Army it served as a purpose built Families Hospital for over one hundred years. Not only did it cater for the maternity needs, it also provided an excellent medical service, second to none for the Families of The Curragh Camp. The hospital had seen hundreds if not thousands of births within its walls, and sadly on occasion the passing of Family members. The Hospital was demolished in the early 1990’s and very little now remains on the site of this once important Curragh Camp landmark.
The Curragh Local History Group has been given permission to erect a monument remembering the Families Hospital in the Memorial Garden opposite St. Brigid’s Garrison Church. The planning of the monument is in its early stages and ideas are still welcome.
A committee of volunteers from The Curragh Local History Group was established with the projected time of seven months to the official unveiling of the monument. Funding for the monument will come through fund raising and contributions over the coming months.
As a working member of the monument committee I would hope that you would support our efforts in raising the required funds to put in place this monument to a piece of Curragh History which is now gone but still alive in the memories of so many Curragh people far and wide across the globe.
As mentioned already the project is still in early planning stages and ideas are still welcome. I hope that you will pass on the information about the project to others, and hopefully they too will support us .
