I was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Breda.
We suffered national school in the same class and did the Secretarial course together in the Tech.
Mrs Costigan in her wisdom decided that myself and Breda should sit the shorthand and typing exam for the Civil Service, which was to take place in Dublin in the inner city in the Matt Talbot hall. We had to bring along our own typewriters, she allowed us to take the two Facit machines which were the only ones in the school that were'nt from the 30's, they were quite new at the time, the list of consequences if anything happened to them was endless. We set off on the 8:30 bus, we were strangled with the weight of them and the fact that their design made them far from portable. Standing on O'Connell St., we did a count of the monies we had, (which was very little) and what we needed to get, the ten Carrolls getting priority, Breda decided she would price a taxi to the venue, over she strolled and asked, I could see the shock on her face when he said the guts of £1, she then turned and asked him how much he charged for luggage, he said nothing, that's free, well she said, as she opened the door and put her typewriter in, in that case you can drop these off and we'll walk, he roared laughing and took us for a very reduced fee.
When we got to the hall it was all business, everyone taking the whole thing very seriously, myself and Breda treating it as a day out, the only incentive for us was the fact that you could not return to work in the C. Service after you married at the time, but they would give you a severance amt of £500 on leaving, we planned how we would spend it a hundred times over on the bus going up. We walked to Bus Aras, (the only way to be sure we were on the Kildare bus then, were'nt confident enough to get it from the Quays) dropping, and pushing the typewriters with our feet along the route and Breda taking off Mrs. Costigan's reaction if she could see the carry on.
We passed the exam and were invited to attend for interview, but after much discussion and deliberation we decided not to attend, the deciding factors being, the early start for the first bus in the mornings and the late return in the evenings upsetting our beauty sleep and social lives.
Happy carefree innocent days.
Deepest sympathy to her family.
Rest in Peace Breda.
Rose Smith.

I spoke to Breda only last week in the Golf Club and she was concerned about my health, how strange life and death are. May she rest in peace. Billy Hyland.
P.S. I see that the Golf Club have cancelled Saturday's competitions and closed the clubhouse on Saturday morning as a mark of respect. Well done.
