Hi All I was contacted recently by a Mr. Walter Hall who is a Military Medal Collector. Anyhow he recently came across a set of rare British Army Sudan Campaign Medals of 1898 and were issued to 2836 Sergeant George Lelliott of the 21st Lancers (Empress of India's Lancers). When Walter researched into Sergeant Lelliott’s Military background he found that within a month after he returned from the Sudan campaign, George actually passed away on the 21st December 1899 in the Curragh Camp and was in fact buried in the Curragh Military Cemetery. He contacted me to see if I could find George’s final resting place in the cemetery. So one sunny Sunday morning (29th May 2011) my wife and I headed up to the cemetery to try and locate George’s Headstone. To be honest I thought the chances of finding it were limited as the headstones from the period are showing the signs of having stood through over one hundred Curragh Winters. Anyhow we found the headstone of Sergeant Lelliott in the recently rejuvenated cemetery. Little did George know that after he died that people would be fussing about him and his time in the military almost one hundred and ten years later. As someone who loves Curragh History and have played many a time in and around the Curragh Military Cemetery, I find it amazing that information like this keeps coming up and shows me a view of a time in The Curragh Camp that I never really knew, but was living amongst all my life. Read Sergeant Lelliott’s story here: www.curragh.info/lelliott/lelliott.htmHope you enjoy Matt Sergeant George Lelliott's Headstone
