Paul Durney and his band Fleadh play Kilcullen Town Hall Theatre on January 18th.
Ex Curragh resident Paul Durney left Kilcullen aged 18 guitar in hand, destiny unknown. 30 odd years down the line on the 18th January 2014 he returns as a member of the German based Irish Folk band Fleadh to play a concert in The Town Hall. Having played in numerous bands through the years in Germany he joined Fleadh in 2007 originally intended as a second project alongside his busking activities at the time. In the meantime under his pseudonym Saoirse Mhór he joined the trad line up of founder member Frank Weber (pipes), Frank Dürschner ( banjo, mando), Tommy Gorny (guitar), Marcus Eichenlaub (fiddle) & recently joined bass man Karl Schramm.
In the meantime Fleadh have produced two studio albums and have reaped awards in both Germany and in Ireland for their cheeky yet respectful mix of songs and traditional Irish music. Their current work The Cleggan Bay Disaster earned Best Folk album & Best Folk Song 2013 at the German Pop & Rock Awards. The same album contains 5 songs written by Paul including the title track, a song relating the fishing tragedy that hit Connemara in 1927. The album has received very positive reviews from folk critics in Germany, France, England and none other than the Irish Music Magazine gave the album its blessing. The band have played in Germany, Poland and Switzerland and recently shared the stage with none other than top Irish Folk band Goitse.
Paul's first musical steps were, ironically, on the stage of Kilcullen Town Hall Theatre, initially with the Capers and with numerous local bands of the era. Practicing in the Tennis Club & the JFK Hall with these local bands are still intense memories of his youth. Paul recalls the enthusiasm of director Paddy Melia during the rehearsals of Marie's Wedding, another Kilcullen production way back when.
Hopefully those who remember Paul during these times will come along on January 18th to hear him along with a super band.
Support is by local musician’s Kieran Behan and Mary Poole, ably assisted by Rory Healy and Aidan Flynn.
Concert starts at 8pm and admission is €10 with support- tickets available from Ray 087 2636375 or Kieran 087 9655286. Enquiries to livebytheliffey@gmail.com
