Happy Easter to All,
Enjoyed yesterday's ceremonies, parades, etc. Had entered the lottery for tickets for the 'A Nation's Voice' concert at Collins Barracks event but lost out, however, it made for enjoyable viewing and listening in the comfort of my own home. The rendition of Mise Éire by the RTÉ SO brought back memories of 1959 when my father sent 3 or 4 of us down to the cinema to watch the film. It was George Morrison's documentary for Gael Linn with music by Seán O Riada and narration, as Gaeilge, by Padraic O'Raghallaigh. Padraic had a very recognisable voice which was heard for years afterwards on RTÉ. Not sure but the film may have been screened nightly for a week, entry was free as far as I remember and when we arrived at the picture house on the Curragh we were the total audience. Much of the commentary would have been lost on us but for my own part the music was stirring and very moving. Some years later I purchased a 7" vinyl of the main theme and since then the CD version.
Yesterday's concert also featured a premiere of 'One Hundred Years a Nation' music composed by Shaun Davey and text by poet Paul Muldoon. Lyrically it gave us a potted history of the past century, warts and all, including wonderful music by the orchestra and massed choir. Look forward to hearing it again soon.
Enjoy the remainder of the events - tonight (Easter Monday) at 9.35pm on RTÉ One a special music programme looks very promising - heard an excerpt this morning of the late Jim McCann song 'Grace' sung by members of the extended Black Family and it is well worth a listen. Check out this link for a preview - youtu.be/uUgt3xC40WU
If I may quote (a little early in the day) a phrase from "The Parting Glass" - 'Goodnight and joy be with you all'
Regards,
