Hi All The following photograph is of The Curragh Camp taking in 1934. I like to old swimming pool with no roof, not too many swimmers in the winter But it also shows the Curragh "Picture House" , Bakery and lots of buildings long since gone, including all the married quarters Matt

Pity the photo did not go a little further to the left as it would have taken in the School, however it is a great photo for it's time. Regards JoeyK

What a wonderful photo.Was/is it a one off shot or could there be more taken at the same time? The roofless swimming pool is mentioned.Just top right from that is a building which had its roof blown off during a storm in the 1950s.The roof as far as I can remember was never replaced.

Great photo Matt, especially given the level of photo technology of the date. One thing puzzles me about the photo. If you were to move from the picture house towards the power station there are two roads in the shape of a ‘V’leading up towards Clarke-McDermott. This old grey head of mine cannot recall the road which forms the right hand leg of the ‘V’. The possible explanations for this are: 1. The road in question was covered over at some stage. Or 2. The gargle has dimmed my mind. Regards to all, JJ

Hi JJ The road in question is actually going up to Mc Dermott Quarters and bordered Clarke Quarters also. The left road on the V would take you up past Clarke Warrant Officers and split Ceannt and Clarke, and links up with the middle road at Ceannt near the Canteen and Grocery bar. The right road on the V split Clarke and Mc Dermott Quarters and ended up on the Middle road also, near the Tech. It was there in the early 50s, perhaps the Gargle has slightly diminished the Old Grey cells. Regards JoeyK

Hi Joe Murray The roof blown off was the Power Station roof in the 60s not 50s, it was replaced as soon as possible thereafter with a Red slated roof. The first of it's kind in the Curragh as all the buildings had the grey slates. Regards JoeyK

Hi all The roofless swimming pool? was it a swimming pool? I think not, I think it was a catchment area for the overspill of water and residue from the pumping station at hare park. There was another of it's type at the back of the Battlers house at Mc Donagh Pumping station. The swimming pool as we would have know it does not appear to have been built at that stage. Regards JoeyK

Hi All Here is a a photograph of Cathal McAlister's Father swimming in the roofless Curragh Swimming pool in the 1930's. CQMS McAlister and his family were living in Clarke Warrant Officers Houses at the time. And as was fashionable for that time, some of the boys were not topless :-) . And judging by their facial tan's the weather was a lot better back then. Matt

Re:Curragh Camp Aerial PHOTO 1934 Hi all Joey the grey matter is failing you badly, come in out of the cold. do you not recall the times that our father told us of the times when he was being reared in Ceannt/Bersford Mqtrs that he would sneak in over the tin walls of the Outdoor pool and sneak a swim of course there was an outdoor pool before they put a roof on it there does not seem to be any boiler house attached to the outdoor pool. The roads referred to in the photo are still in use today albut the one that led up to the middle road beside the Tech. is only going as far as the bottom block McDermott Qtrs and comes out at the old scout hut. nice to see the old photo brings back fond memories. bye for now. Hi JoeK With regard to the road forming the right leg of the ‘V’ (in aerial photo), I am pleased to say that the disposition as described by Johnny Kelly in his post is exactly as I remember it. So it would seem I didn’t drink enough of the gargle yet. I well remember going at warp speed down the hill past the W/O houses (left leg of the ‘V’) in a contraption called a go-cart soapbox, made from old pram wheels and some planks of wood ‘borrowed’ from the Bord of Works yard. Luxuries such as brakes were not included in the design and the steering consisted of a piece of rope. Somehow we survived. Regards JJ

JJCurran you brought many memories of the Curragh trolly races. My races were run on a descending road parralel to yours in Plunkett. We took off from the top road and when we arrived at full speed at the bottom, just beside where the Mc Graths lived, we crossed the bottom road at speed into the parking of the old gym. As you said no such a thing as brakes, just the heels of your shoes. The more adventurous went down lying on their stomachs and steering with their hands .I often think waht would have happened if a car had come along the road !!.

Johnny and JJ The road that I am referring to goes exactly as I said, and I did readdress my statement about the Topless pool. Johnny the road that I am referring to is the one that goes from the old Bank/ Credit union down past Clarke married Quarters and leads down to the bottom road, albeit it is now closed. The road that Johnny refers to is more of a path. So I am so glad to say that the Old Grey matter is still intact, and I rarely post anything unless I am 100% with my answer. Regards JoeyK
