Shame on the top brass the tanks weren't in the Congo in Sept 61 instead of playing Cowboys and Indian's in the Glen. Should have spent some of the money on leadership, might have worked out a better deal for those that perished. Edward.

Edward,
How goes it, as far as the footage in the Glen of the Commets goes it was excellent, not sure that it would have made sense to have them in the Congo. After all there were only two and think of the logistic nightmare trying to keep them servicied for example spare parts would have come via Peter rob Paul.
There was lots of light armoured cars in the Congo, not forgetting we were a fledgling nation at that time and equipment on issue to the troops then reflected that scenario.
Like all good armies those serving made the best of what they had.
Matt an excellent piece last time I saw the Comets in action was as they thrundled through the Camp and the Plains of the Curragh, the two of them could keep a petrol station in business on their own.

How do Guest Guest.
Had a look at your clip but afraid Matt's wins hands down.
Now if any one expects our Army, Air Force or Navy to live up to the bigger counteries then they will be disappointed.
For our size and Defence Budget we are lucky to have any of the Arms of the Forces.

You are correct there Andy and the footage of the Comet Tanks in the Glen is indeed a great clip. Having seen them as a youngster on O'Higgins Tce Curragh Camp I thought I would never see footage of them again. It is a rare find and the quality is excellent . I know it will bring back many fond memories to many who may seen them and maybe having being part of a crew. I can watch Discovery History anytime to see the other stuff or do as I have on a couple of occasions in the past go to the Tank Museum in Bovington, England. A real treat for anybody who loves Tanks and Armour.

Hi all, The clip of the comet tanks was excellent and as you say Matt, brought back many happy memories I had as a lad on the Curragh.I remember the ‘ball alley’ range and on many occasion watched with great enjoyment as the Comets practiced firing at little black rubber tanks with a .22 rifle attachment strapped to the main gun. I remember a Churchill tank getting bogged down in a pond just in front of the internment camp. As it was towed out the inmates of the internment camp (IRA) all clapped and cheered much to the annoyance of the tank commander who waved his fist at them. Happy memories. Regards JJ
