Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum and have read some interesting articles, so thought I would join and see if anyone out there can help.
I corresponded with Matt a few weeks ago regarding my late Uncle, he advised me to contact the defence forces website, which I did, they are still looking into my query but having problems finding my late uncle's service record which seems strange to me.
His name was Patrick McInerney but his birth record shows him as Murtagh, apparently the Murtagh name was dropped and they used the McInerney name. he was living In Cavan when he enlisted with the Irish Army possibly in 1939. He was a trained mechanic and went into the transport division as a driver. I live in the UK but was speaking to a family member in Cavan this week who verified the details I have are correct.
It appears that he was at relatives in Abbey Street Cavan either on sick leave or probably he was absent without leave, he was ill at the time, this was sometime in 1944. Apparently an army official called at Abbey street looking for him, Patrick although not well agreed to go back to Curragh, but he had to be admitted to Curragh Military Hospital and sadly passed away in July 1944. My new found relatives in Dublin have a remembrance/Mass card for him showing him in uniform and stating that he died in Curragh Hospital 1944.
I have just received an e-mail from the defence forces, stating they have passed my query onto the Enlisted Personnel Management Dept, so I will await their findings.
I just wondered if there is anything else I can do in my research for him, I must say that everyone I have come in contact with have been most helpful, and that goes for Matt who pointed me in the right direction at First.
Kind Regards,
Patricia.
