Hi All The purpose of the Curragh Historical Photographs thread is to bring together all the photographs into one convenient area, but yet in different folders for easy access and searching for specific topics. I will provide links to the different folders, whereby you can open the link and view the photographs in the folder. Then if you click on a photograph and this will in turn open in a slideshow. Once the slideshow is open you will notice on the top left hand side there is a link called Run Slideshow. This will run the slideshow for you and if you want to look at a photograph a little longer just press Pause Slideshow. I hope this new feature will encourage other people to get out the old photographs and send them to me by e-mail to matt@curragh.info and I can have them displayed here in this vital historical section. Photograph by John J Curran "The challenge of history is to recover the past and introduce it to the present" What better way to show the long history of The Curragh than using photographs. Matt

Hi Matt,
full marks for organizing the photo gallery, any chance some or all could be viewed as a slide show??
Keep it coming
Andy
Hi Andy
If you open the link and view the photographs in a folder. Then click on a photograph and this will open in a slideshow. On the top left hand side there is a link called Run Slideshow. This will run the slideshow for you and if you want to look at a photograph a little longer just press Pause Slideshow.
Hope this helps

Hi Matt, thank you for the photo gallery. It certainly makes things a lot easier to access and select a chosen slideshow for me anyway I have to admit.

Hi Matt, A huge thank you for the new photo galleries, so much easier to find and view pictures with all the individual folders and the slide show option is fantastic, it'll be a great help for anyone looking up people or just browsing and reminising A lot of time and hard work involved for you putting it all together but a job well done and much appreciated. I hope it will encourage more people to root out old snaps from drawers and attics to add to the photographic history already here, that would be so good. MaryF

Hi Tony(guest) I think you'll find most of us were the very same (computer illiterate)when we started off on here, and we're all still learning. But it really is true practice may not make perfect but it does really help a lot, and rest assured theres plenty on here will be only to happy to guide you in the right direction. We've all been in the same position and I know I still do get stuck but help is only a post away. So welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy. Sorry I'm wittering on again to get to the photos click onto Curragh Historical Photographs and then scroll down, I think the first one underneath begins with' Curragh Family Album' and click onto that and then click onto the web address in orange this will take you to the photos in that particular section. To view them just click onto each individual lot. I think at the moment theres 10 different categories ie: congo, family life etc each one with its own individual link to log into... All of the threads under that contain the different categories of photos just do the same with each one. Hope this helps happy viewing. MaryF

Hi My God it really is tough! I even read the answer to 'How do you view the photos' and I followed the reply to a dead end!! I clicked on the 'Curragh Historical Photographs' Looked down and no sign of any Family Album! It amazes me why has anyone have to ask where they are, especially after we have logged in.

Hi Reezacman I have put together the following slides to show you and others how to select an album to view from the the Curragh Historical Photographs Thread. The process is the same for any album within the Curragh Historical Photographs Thread. I hope this has helped and I do hope you enjoy the photographs. Regards Matt McNamara

Hi All,
After much encouragement from Tony Moore, I have finally joined your Forum.
I have been looking at the Site for years and really enjoy it and it's a credit to Matt for starting it and to all the Forum members who keep posting on this Forum!
My name is Derek Rochford and I served with the 33rd Battalion in the Congo in 1960. I served with the 4th Motor Squadron in Plunkett Bks., from 1959 to 1962.
I was delighted to see all the lovely Photos that were posted on the Site under the heading of '33rd Battalion prepares to go to the Congo'. Indeed it was Tony who Emailed me to tell me that he had seen a Group Photo of the 33rd Bn., with me in it. He has a great memory for faces, because that Photo is over 50 years old, which makes me realise how old I am getting! How time flys ! When I looked at that Photo, I was surprised to realise that I myself remembered the names of about 15 or so in that Photo. I often wondered where they all are now! It was also very nostalgic for me! As this message appears to be long, I will do that at a later stage! For now, I just want to say that I am very happy that I was accepted as a member on this Forum and hope that I will be able to post something of interest on it, from time to time!
Regards to you Tony and to all on the Site,
Derek Rochford.

If you can help me identify the photograph and hopefully you can also send me the names where possible and I will gladly put them up on the site. Looking forward to hearing from you in the future. Hi Matt,
Thanks for welcoming me to the Forum. It is a very nice jesture!
I will endevour to Email you tomorrow @ web@curragh.info with details of the Photo that I was referring to and also the names that I have so far been able to remember.
It will be nice for some people who brouse this Forum to see their names, or the names of relatives, from a time that now seems so long ago, on those Photos! I know that I was delighted when Tony told me that he had recognised me in that Photo.
Little did those of us who went to the Congo then, realise that we were blazing a trail for overseas service that continues to this day and it's a source of national pride now that Irish Soldiers have distinguised themselves abroad, in the name of peace and in the name of Ireland.
Regards to everyone,
Derek Rochford

Hi Matt, Tony & Forum Members & Guests,
Under the Photo Section and the Heading '33rd Infantry Bn., Assembles in the Curragh', I was looking at these Photos over the past few days, putting names on the faces that I knew, as I had told Matt that I would.
The Photo that I am in and know some of the faces in, is the 5th Photo down on the left hand side. Then lo and behold, on the other Group Photo, which is the 3rd Photo in, I noticed something very odd, for which there may be a simple explaination and it is this;
The Cavalry Beret in my time in the Cavalry, was always pulled down on the right hand side of the head, but in the 3rd Group Photo that I refer to, all those who are wearing the Cavalry Beret have them pulled down to the left hand side!!
Maybe I am losing the plot ( My wife thinks I lost it a long time ago anyway) but I wonder what is the explaination for the Berets being pulled down on the left hand in the Group Photo that I have referred to?
Thanks in anticipation of an answer,
Derek Rochford

Hi Derek Fair play to you for noticing that. The Sam Brown on the officer is also 'wrong way'. This is because the negative of the photo was put into the enlarger for printing 'flipped horizontally' in error. This was of course in the days before digital photography during the time when babies were found under a cabbage plant. Regards JJ
