Re: Did You Serve in the Curragh Camp? Hi Jeanette welcome to the forum Mickey Grey was the c/s in the gym and lived in the Curragh for years and was followed onto the staff of the gym by his 2 sons Jimmy and Mickey, Capt Joe OKeefe was the chief instructor of the gym, and went on to record many programmes on fitness on RTE,IE Keep fit with Joe oKeefe, it would be common practice for physical training courses to under go 2 weeks of adventure training in the glen of Immal and navigation would be part of hill walking training in the mountains as well as absailing rope crossing from the highest trees in the world as they seem from ground level as well as river crossing with poles unlucky if the pole you picked was short or wet, also canoeing all kinds of adventure training, on my course we had to run up Keadeen mountain at the back of Coolmooney camp, before breckfast, and no doging as the c/o would be watching you through binnoculars all the way up and down, but great fun, bye for now Johnny

well there i was in lloyds bar in dublin, down to me last bob or 2,wondering where the wind was going to take me,this is factual.i was the only chap in the bar at about 10 am,circa, march 69,this man enterd the bar and said to the barman 2 pints of stout, and i was the recipient of one of them, anyways it transpired ,he was celebrating his discharge from the army, and we got into conversation,i told him that i was on me way back to the uk,he said NONSCENCE,he said to me ,get yur but up to collins bks and sign on the dotted line, yul get 3 square meals a day, cash every week, and clean sheets ,,i replied to him begod yu hit the nail on the head, and up i went to collins bks, where i signed up on the dotted line, anyways on the monday i headed to the curragh for me training,no 3 platoon mcdonagh bks, looking back i dont think i wud have survived the training but for my street life experiences, anyways i passed out in full battle order ,cos of the troubles in 69,to cut a long story short i served in several units completing my 21 years service, over all i have no regrets ,it was a great life and i have no hesitation in recommending the army to any one also i served twice overseas with unifil,my time in mcdonagh bks was probaly the best period of my life till then, best regards to all
