Hi JJ. I Don't suppose you remember were Tom Sinnott came from? Because a Tom Sinnott did a cooks course with my uncle Simon in 1943 in Connelly Bks. There's a photo in galley 7 taken on the stairs in Connelly ,just wondering if it's the same Tom Sinnott? Regards. Ant.

Hi JJ. Yeah Tom Sinnott is from Wexford not sure if its the same man we're talking about. I was unable to find the link for the Sinnot family. I did manage to get into the galley of the Curragh Family photos. The thing is i might be mistaken but you've sparked something in the back of my mind. I was stationed in Plunkett Bks ,was Tom a Sergeant in the 4th Motor ? The mind might now be playing tricks because i got a face in my minds eye. Getting back to my Uncle's pal he went on to work as a caretaker in the Co- op in Wexford Town on corner of Parnell street. Regards Ant.

Hi JJ an Ant and all Shadowers. JJ your memories of Tom Sinnott showing you the films, brings me back to the times late 50s early 60s when Wills Gold Flake Cigarette Company would tour the Camp with it's mobile Cinema, a van with the projector on the inside and the screen a window on the side of the van, showing such greats as Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, The Cisco Kid and Pancho, etc. Looking back it was a great innovation and way ahead of it's time in a technical sense. Of course the main object was of a promotional sense, in getting the troops to switch allegiance to the Wills Cigarette Brand. The fondest memory of my seeing the above was when I lived in Plunkett as a very young lad, in the now demolished block just down from the Canteen. Sitting outside the small Red Bricked Ball Alley, on a beautiful Summer's eve surrounded by most of the kids who lived in Plunett/Connolly at the time Bertie Stacey, Frankie O Leary, Patsy White, Toddy Gannon, to name but a few, with a good number of troops from the aforementioned barracks. looking at the above. Us kids were given small bags of sweets or a penny bar of Cleeves toffee, and the troops given a five pack of Gold Flake or Woodbine. I was always in awe of the said mobile van and still relish that fond memory. Cheers to you and all. Regards J Kelly " Up The Curragh, Up Pearse, and Up the Cisco Kid".

Hi Tony & JJ,
Tom Sinnott was indeed in the 4th Motor Squardon and when I was leaving in 1962, he was a CS. I found him to be very strict , but I also found him to be very fair and I admired him. He was definitely of the 'Old School'.
Tony, I remember the other man that you speak about and he did work in the CO-OP, but it was not CS Tom Sinnott.
Hope all on the site are keeping well,
Regards,
Derek

Hi Joey,
Congratulations - it was a fantastic read I was glued to the computer reading all the memories last night - nothing distracted me not even the phone!!!! How life has moved on and so fast..
The mention of the 'Picture House', The Swimming Pool, The various shops, the Orchard, the Plains, and so many more too numerous to mention - the privileged time we lived in the Curragh, the simplicity, the wonderful neighbours the idea of going 'out to play' in the morning and not getting home til evening and our parents knowing in their hearts that we all would be OK and safe. The walks and having to bring your younger sister and brother with you (reluctantly) because you could not sneek a quick kiss from Charlie Coleman or talk to John Brady incase they would tell on you.
I am going to sit down one of these evenings and start to write my memories because I really enjoyed reliving all those memories you brought home to me Joey.
Again well done and many thanks,
Mary Keane.

Help needed, anyone point me in the right direction to help find an old pathe news film reel that was shown before the main film in the old curragh cinema in the 50's. My great grandfather was William Hartley who served and lived there for many years with my grandfather Edward Hartley and his brothers Michael Hartley,Tony Hartley,Liam(Bill)Hartley. I have photos taken from April 1953 by the Irish Times as they wrote a piece in the paper about them as they all served in the defence forces at the same time.Liam or Bill as he was also known also served over in the Congo.I will post pictures as soon as i get a chance. If anyone can help i would very much appreciate it

Hello Lara Geary, My name is John J Curran.(Johnjoe) I lived with my brother Jude beside your mother in 4F block Ceannt from 1947 to 1957. I remember the Sinnotts well. Philip, your mother Marie, Patsy , Michael and I think Martin. Philip sold newspapers for the Dobbins and I remember him getting the papers from the bus at Farrell’s shop and racing on his bike to Brownstown and selling the papers before the bus reached the shops in Brownstown. Your grandmother as I remember was a fantastic knitter and was an expert at the ‘fairisle’ stitch. I remember Tom showing films to the whole block on Friday nights. If you look at the family photos on this site you will see a photo of your grandfather Tom and your Mother Marie on the occasion of Marie’s Communion. Regards JJ

Hello JohnJoe,
Forgive my poor typing yesterday, using a phone never the best.
My mum, Marie, is so delighted to hear from you. When we looking at pictures she spotted you and your brother immediately. She told me how fond she was of you both. Philip lives in Oxford with his wife and two sons, Patsy lives in England and has a son and daughter and is now a grandma, Michael is in Kildare with his family, Frankie and Tommy, the twins, both live in London just up the road from my mum and I. Frankie has a daughter. My mum has me and my sister and is also raising her grandson. I don't know if you knew my dad, Paddy Geary?
I have had a lot of fun reading all the comments and showing them to my mum, I think she will be inspired to explore the world of the internet more now, she does have an iPad. I may even get her to be on facebook, are you?
Best regards,
Lara

Hi Lara, Marie and all the Sinnotts. I see from your last posting that most of the Sinnotts left Ireland. Given the state of this country , that was a very wise decision. The Currans on the other hand are still here doing our best to help out the Banks and Politicians and keep them in the lifestyle that they have come to expect. (I’m not joking). Marie, you may remember we left the Curragh in Dec 1959 when my dad was transferred to Kilkenny. My brothers Jude and Martin and my sister Philomena are true Kilkenny Cats and have one son and three daughters between them, plus four grandchildren. My sister Catherine ( a true shadower) is living in Dublin and has two daughters and a son. I myself have wound up in Athlone and I have two daughters (twins) and five grandchildren. It’s great to hear of you after all these years. Marie I remember you had a smile which would brighten any day.
With regard to your dad, I remember the name Geary from Plunkett but I can’t say I knew your Dad. As regards facebook, I have a facebook page which I use exclusively to keep up to date with photos of my grandchildren as my daughter Fiona McCormack is a prolific facebook addict.
Please give my regards to all. JJ

Hello Lara Geary, if you go into the Old Photo Gallery and go to Gallery No 12 and scroll down to the bottom left of the page there is a photo of the Choir in 1960, in it you will find a Chubby Geary, I don't know but I assume he is related to you. Bye for now Liam Kearney.
