Hey Sharkey, As far as i'm aware our house No 4 is gone. I've been back a few times and stood on the foundations.(correct me if i'm wrong ) I remember my dad in those days loved a bit of gardening lots of spuds growing in the back garden along with the usual Scallions, Lettuce and the odd pea. Do you remember the Mulveys they lived across from us in the brick built houses, I used to think they were so posh living in those houses as ours were galvanised...lol.. I remember an old man lived next door to us and on my birthday one year he came out and gave me a fruit cake. I was thrilled i must have only been 6 or 7 maybe younger but its kind gestures like that of the little old man that have made the curragh and our memories what they stand for. I've been in england for almost 19 years now and i still get homesick. I hope that never leaves me. Take care x Liz

Hi Liz I remember living across from your family when they lived in Owen Roe Road. My Ma would send us all across to your Ma when my Dad was away, on any occasion when we had to wear a tie, because my ma could never make a knot. The Old man who gave you the cake might be Mr Mc Redmond, the Range Warden. My Dad and your Dad were great buddies. Hope your Mam is keeping well. Kind regards Joey Kelly. PS if Sharkey is reading this hello!

Hi all, Manage to check this site out every now and then. Love all the photos in particular and will try to upload a few of my own one day. Been abroad for over 26 years but apart from 1 year in Newbridge I spent the first 18 years of my life in the Curragh. Now live in Co. Kilkenny. Born in Family's Hospital (demolished), lived in Ceannt (demolished) , Clark (demolished) , Hare Park (demolished) , O'Higgins Tce (No21 is still standing thank God :)as thats where I spent the best years of my life. I also love to drive by it whenever I am in the area) and then for about 6 months in O'Higgins Rd before I left, although my parents lived there for another 4 years. Great site. Great people.

Hi Eamonn
Great to see some of my old neighbours posting on the site. I am sure you remember the war games on the plains on Saturday mornings, down by the old interment camp and up to the plantation. Many hours of harmless fun. Anyhow good to see you posting and look forward to any pictures you might have.

Rose. Hi Rose, The currans lived in 6A, they moved to dunshaughlin, then to dublin. You have a great memory of life on the Curragh, it's nice to read all the comments from all the former residents. I'm still in the Curragh in Orchard Park. Lived most of my life in McDonagh Bks, then it went all posh and was McDonagh Terrace, i remember my aunt mary in cork thought we had moved when my ma gave her the new address. Mary

Hi Mary,
Funny I can remember himself and herself but cant remember the lads, now tell me this who lived in 1B before Paddy McCormack, do you remember the McCuskers , Archie think his second name was Carter lived on his own further up B block, also can remember Eggars, Irene in particular. Salmons lived in 5A before we moved down from 11B again can remember her but cant remember the family. Was chatting with Anne and her husband over the Christmas on the message board, lovely to hear from her. Can remember Mary Phillips RIP getting married and having a house wedding and managing to get in for a few minutes for a bit of trifle and one of the McCusker girls had her wedding party in the house and getting in there as well the song Dan From Conamara was played on the record player most of the day only being changed for Bridie Gallagher's The Boys From The County Armagh, must have been the only two records they had. McCuskers lived in 8a Block.

I only remember johnny egger, myself and ann ivers r.i.p., used to call into johnny's house when we were mitching school. I remember one of the mccuskers, our noeleen used to be mistaken for her, i think her name might be maggie, not too sure. I think i remember archie, if its the same man, he used to work in golf club, when my ma used to work there, before going to work in the wes. My sister betty, r.i.p. also had her wedding in the house, that was the tradition at the time, how times have changed. Mary

I lived in 33 Pearse Terrace in the early 70s, next door to the Phelans, then moved up to Canteen Managers House Pearse until I left the Army for Civvy life. Must say I miss my Curragh days and i am sure I will contribute some of my stories over time, and pictures. Recognise some of the posters names and each one brings with it a particular set of memories. From the Curragh I moved to Dublin and then to the Philippines where I have lived for the last six years.

Hello
My name is Michael Kelly . I am aged 61 .I was Born and reared in the Curragh Camp . We lived in No.1 Connolly Tce from 1948 to 1953. Among the Families living there at the time were the Coughlans, Whytes, Wally Tobin and the Gannons, who I think moved to Kilkenny . and we then moved to 5 B Block Ceannt until 1957. We lived beside Joe Stewart and Joey Quinn, the Salmons, Andersons and Billy Mullery . Other residents who lived there were the Kearneys, Sheridans, McMahons, Thorpies, Powers, O'Connors, Sullivans, Joe Donohue, Frankie Mullins, John-Joe Dwyer, Jack Nagle, Larry Keane, the Flynns, Grays, O'Reillys and the Sinnots .
We moved to No.1 C Block McDonagh in November 1957 . In the Block were the Conways, Drurys, Clarkes, Brennans, Harpers, George O'Neill, Dick Ivers, Aherns, and the Heffernans . In the middle Block among the people residing there were The O'Briens, Martin Kelly, Bolgers, (I think the Mary Bolger had her Wedding Reception in her House), Billy O'Brien, John Joe Neenan, Geary's, McCuskers, Dolans McCarneys and the Brophy's . In the front Block among those living there were the Donohues, Hartleys, and the Currans .
We moved to 1 W O Connolly Bks(Beside the Canteen) in 1959 and we lived beside the McConnons . We lived there until my Father - John retired from the Army in 1974 . He then worked for 6 years in the Board of Works as the Range Warden . Both my Parents then moved to to Avondale Drive in Kilcullen . However,my Father sadly passed away in 1985 at the age of 71 . My Mother however who is aged 87 next Birthday is still residing there .
I joined the Army Apprentice School in 1962 . I transferred to the Corps of Engineers ,McDermott Barracks, in 1968 . And I retired from the Army in 2002 having completed 40 years Service . I am still however working in the Curragh in the Cavalry Workshops (Tintown as we would have known it) .
I have just discovered this Site today . And I recognise quite a lot of the people who have posted on it . It is nice to hear that people have such fond memories of the Curragh as it was in the past . It was indeed a unique and great community. There are still a few of those who lived there in the 50's, 60' and 70's still residing here .
I see that Joe kelly is a regular contributor to this Site . he is a great character as was his Father before him and indeed all of his Family . I meet with Joe occasionally . So if anyone has any news about former residents, I would love to hear from them . Best wishes to you all in the future .
Fond Regards, Michael Kelly (Mickey)

Hi Michael,
Nice to see you have joined the site, it's nice to hear all the stories about the Curragh in times past. My sister Noeleen used to pal around with your sister Kathleen, the last time I was talking to you, you showed me a picture of a group of students from the Tech, going on a tour, why don't you post that picture on the site, I'm sure it would be bring back a lot of memories to those students. You were supposed to get me a copy, hope you can do that as well. Take care
Mary Byrne (Dolan)
