Hi All, and a special hello to the bould Billy, who was always Paddy's big brother when I was growing up!
My late Dad always referred to the comrades with whom he did his first duty as a soldier on the Camp, by their nicknames. He was Jas M, and they were the Hike, the Hook, the Jigger, the Haw, the Pony and the Dog. all of them are now on Eternal Duty (maybe even together), but who knows them by their real names?
Hi Sham Welcome back, I think I may have answered some of those nicknames before, however here goes, The Hook O Neill, Jigger Dalton,The Dog Kelly, The Dog Connolly, The Hooker Regan, The Haw and The Pony have me ""stumped"", another few names, Ginger Dick, Lofty, Shady, Micko, Gildy, The Rat, Mousey, Ringer, Scotchy, some may be repeats, at the risk of repeating myself! What are we talking about? Regards JKelly (Kelloggs)
Met Joey last week who recommended this site, well done all concerned. Glad to see Paddy Troy (Homer) is alive and kickin, Howya Paddy, BOC you forgot about Paddys brother Sean, "CHEYENNE" thinking back to those fond days I am reminded of the epic battles with the bottom block, your leadership qualities were always to the fore, but we never figured out why you were always at the back!!! Someone once told me that AWBO Nolans nickname derived from "All bones no skin but flesh" go figure...

It looks like this is an old dead thread and it might be too late to revive it, but here goes.....
When Davy Hughes was very young, no more than a nipper, he really wanted to be a motor-car and didn’t quite seem to understand that he was in fact human, and not car. Because of this his preferred means of locomotion was something akin to what the Roadrunner used to do. Davy ran around constantly with his two hands up in front of him gripping his steering wheel and making engine noises as he went. Anytime he stoppped for a moment he used to rev his engine up before taking off again….hence his nickname….YinYin Hughes.
Then there were the Callaghans who lived near the far end of the bottom block. Sonny was the older Callaghan and his younger brother was called Jim. His real name was Brian and I have no idea why we called him Jim. (Maybe it was Sonny-Jim. Go figure).
Jim had a constant smirk on his face and was a master of the art of bragging. He would brag about anything and everything and there was no limit to the extravagant claims he would make….always delivered with that trademark smirk that said
“ yeah, we all know I’m just bragging, but I dare anyone to out-brag me, you’ll never do it”.
A third member of the Callaghan clan was their dog Shep. According to the Callaghans, Shep was the best dog in the world and there was nothing dog-wise that he couldn’t do. (Actually I think this was one time Sonny out-did his brother in the bragging stakes)
Anyway Shep was the most famous dog in Pearse. He was more famous than RinTinTin. He was even more famous than Rebel Hughes, if you can believe that. That’s how famous he was.
Hi Frank, As you can see its never to late to revive any of the old threads! there are some gems back there which have momentarily slipped back into the archives so its always great when someone dusts them off and brings them to the forefront and gives them a new lease of life. Fondly remember young Davey Hughes RIP a regular sight revving around the block on his imaginary motorbike. If memory serves me right he was also known as Daithi Locha? I Always felt a bit left out, when everyone else had a nickname I never did MaryF

Funny you should say that. I was just thinking it was mostly the boys who got the nicknames, may be a bit of sexism involved in that, unless someone can prove me wrong and come up with a list of girls nicknames? Maybe you had them all right, but kept them to yourselves and just didn't let us boys in on the secret.
As for Daithi Locha I think that one maybe rings a very vague bell somewhere in the dim recesses. Sharky Kelly reminded me earlier about his brother Francis being called Butch. That was another one I had completely forgotten
PS. I didn't type 'nookieism'.. I typed a different word but it got censored by 'the machine' Gotta watch these machines. They're taking over the world.

A few of the girls nicknames and they were few that come to mind are:
Noeleen Reilly (Mini) Ann Maher (Titch) Liz Kane (Sarge) Mary Barry (Geezer) There was Gel and Fella Maher, don't know if Gel (RIP) was short for her christian name or a nickname and for the life of me can't remember Fella's christian name.

Aah, great stuff.
Liam, I think I remember Sonny as the Dude allright, but the Cool doesn't ring any bell with me. Also I never knew about the older Sean.
Rose, thanks for those, they're every bit as good as the boys names. I knew Mary Barry well but never knew, or just don't remember, that she was called Geezer.
I knew Mini Reilly well also, but had forgotten her 'real' name of Noeleen. Mini, of course, had a brother Fred who was known as Professor or just Fess for short....Nothing to do with being clever, I don't think, but for being cool... like the Fonz...or the Cool
