Hi all, Having looked at all the Rugby over the week-end, I just could'nt help notice the passion in some of the Anthems in particular the French National Anthem 'La Marseillaise' it is a really stirring tune, the others that stood out are Ireland's Call I personally think that tune or a Nation Once Again, should be the offical Anthem of this country. Flower of Scotland is another that stirs the heart. I asked my own family including Grandchildren if they were ever thought our Anthem in school at any time and the answer No!!what a shame. The Soldier's Song(Amhrain Ná Bhiánn) written in 1907 by Peadár Kearney and Uncle of Brendan Behan, was not widely known until the 1916 Rebellion where it was sung, and thereafter, in the various Internment camps. It displaced the Fenian Anthem "God Save Ireland in 1926 as the offical Anthem of Ireland. The first four bars and the last five bars of the Anthem is the offical Presidential Salute for the President of Ireland. Come on Ireland!!! Regards JKelly

Hi Andy Indeed he, Jerry Ryan, is, (so far removed he is not on the same planet). Hey Andy! you would'nt have a spare Sam Browne lying around there, by any chance!, what with all the promotions and steps up the ladder you have taken. Should be plenty lying around. Sir! Regards JoeyK

Hi Joey and all, I can't believe that they don't learn the National Anthem in school nowadays thats such a shame and so sad. Rose do you remember Peggy teaching us in both Irish and English and we singing the Irish version with great pride in the assembley hall in the then New School when we moved there? I still remember every word and being away from home my heart swells with a sense of pride and belonging whenever I hear it and even though I don't have a musical note in my head I always join in with a passion that stems from our army days even finish off with a salute learned from watching my da on countless parades down through the years. Bye for Now MaryF

Ás Gaeilge: Amhrán na bhFiann
Seo dhibh a cháirde duan Óglaigh, Cathréimeach briomhar ceolmhar, Ár dtinte cnámh go buacach táid, 'S an spéir go min réaltogach Is fonnmhar faobhrach sinn chun gleo 'S go tiúnmhar glé roimh thíocht do'n ló Fé chiúnas chaomh na hoiche ar seol: Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann
Curfá Sinne Firnna Fáil A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn, buion dár slua Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn, Fé mhóid bheith saor. Sean tír ár sinsir feasta Ní fhagfar fé'n tiorán ná fé'n tráil Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil, Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil Le guna screach fé lámhach na bpiléar Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.
Cois bánta réidhe, ar árdaibh sléibhe, Ba bhuachach ár sinsir romhainn, Ag lámhach go tréan fé'n sár-bhrat séin Tá thuas sa ghaoith go seolta Ba dhúchas riamh d'ár gcine cháidh Gan iompáil siar ó imirt áir, 'S ag siúl mar iad i gcoinne námhad Seo libh, canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann

In English: A Soldier's Song
We'll sing a song, a soldier's song, With cheering rousing chorus, As round our blazing fires we throng, The starry heavens o'er us; Impatient for the coming fight, And as we wait the morning's light, Here in the silence of the night, We'll chant a soldier's song.
Chorus Soldiers are we whose lives are pledged to Ireland; Some have come from a land beyond the wave. Sworn to be free, No more our ancient sire land Shall shelter the despot or the slave. Tonight we man the gap of danger In Erin's cause, come woe or weal 'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal, We'll chant a soldier's song.
In valley green, on towering crag, Our fathers fought before us, And conquered 'neath the same old flag That's proudly floating o'er us. We're children of a fighting race, That never yet has known disgrace, And as we march, the foe to face, We'll chant a soldier's song.
Chorus
Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale! The long watched day is breaking; The serried ranks of Inisfail Shall set the Tyrant quaking. Our camp fires now are burning low; See in the east a silv'ry glow, Out yonder waits the Saxon foe, So chant a soldier's song.
Chorus

Hi Maryf and all It is indeed sad that the Anthem is not done in the schools anymore. I remember Butt Mc Cormack with his Flip Chart, and all the song words and musical notes, from which we learned such great songs as the Anthem As Gaielgé agus Bearla, A Nation once again, On Ramellis Field, Bring flowers of the fairest and so on, the chart flittered and torn, but lovingly stuck together with sellotape, as he Butt pointed out each word and note of the song (his only redeeming feature) I just loved those singing lessons, and wished that they would go on forever, "anything was better than maths". While not blessed with Joe's voice I can still remember all the words and airs.
