Well gang who remembers the Green Shield Stamps, I got a few tonight off a pal and they bring back a load of memories. used to get them in Tuttils in Newbridge as far as I can remember. we went there to do the weekly shop. Hal used to drive the coach picking people up in the Croft, Bush and surrounding areas, Jimmy McDonald was a manager in the store if not him his brother. It was one of the first supermarkets in the locality and done a roaring trade. Hal's bus would be packed with us shoppers and our groceries and there was plenty of banter on those trips.
First item we got with our books of stamps were two stools still in use to this day over 30 years old, other items are long consigned to the scrap yard.
What did you get with your stamps

Oh I do remember an article about Jimmy Saville when he Bought a Rolls Royce ,he looked for and got his quota of green shield stamps.
At least it was reported in The News of the World way back then.

Hi Andy, I remember the green shield stamps, my mum collected them and I think there was a catalogue with the items and how many stamps you needed for them, I not too sure if it was Dublin you had to go to use them, can anyone help me there? MaryC

Hi Andy,
Tuthills was where we got our Green Shield stamps too, Gaye McNamara worked there on the check out a Shadower like ourselves, can remember going up to Dublin once to the shop, very sparse kind of like Argos, a few items on display you handed in your books and they brought it out to you, your right you sent off for them in the post. Green Shield stamps got me into hot water once, playing post office, pretending to be Paddy Costigan handing them out to my friends.

Hi Rose,
you have come up trumps again , Gaye McNamara I cant place her at all.
The stamps had to have a monetary value it was .033 of a penny in the good old L.S.D. currency.

Hi All As a child I do remember the Green Shield Stamps and my mother collecting them in O’Donnell’s shop. Also vaguely remember going on a trip to Dublin as a nipper with my mother and going to some collection depot where mam traded in her Green Shield Stamps books for something in a catalogue. Matt

Hi Matt,
Fair play to ye, the picture of the stamps brings back many memories, the excitement when Mam sent off for something, ( we were easy pleased) don't fret I had'nt forgotten what they looked like.
Cheers,
Rose.

Hi Andy
My Mam sent for a set of delph with the green shield stamps, waited about 3 weeks and the most beautiful Royal Tara china tea set arrived. The pattern is Bird and Fruit, she waited and waited on some correspondance from them [no phones] anyway she gave it to me some years later. It now has pride of place on my dresser.
