Hi Matt and Louis. Good shot that, obviously taken by Louis from his Bedroom window in Canteen House. Note the hand cart in the Fuel yard: you do not see many of them around these days, that fuel yard fairly served a good few of the residents houses in the old days, "when no one was looking". It was obvious from the photo that there were not many residents left living in the quarters at that time, the absence of children and cars, and that the quarters had started the first asendency into dilapidation. However still a good memory. Regards JKelly

Hi Matt and Louis, What a great picture and with the snow, seeing these pictures always make me feel homesick. Trees and open spaces in the background also great, now all you really see is house and houses or highrises and not enough openspaces. I also agree with JKelly and the absence of children at one time it was full of children but I don't remember many cars probably I've been gone too long. Cheers Mary C

Hi Teresa,
Great to hear I cheered you up. I hear the snow back home is fairly fierce, I have many memories of being on the 'beat' in the glasshouse during such weather and finding it next to impossible to get warm, especially my toes!!!, Over here I have no such worries as the extreme heat and humidity of the tropics surrounds me. Though to be honest I do miss the cold weather (easy to say when I do not have to experience it), I wish you all the best for 2010.

Hi Joey,
You are spot on (as always) 'twas taken from my bedroom window at the time. The handcart you referred to I believe was originally intended to transport 81mm Mortar or suchlike, and perhaps it had another similar use before that and may well have been equipment left behind by the British.

Hi Mary, Homesick! All of us who are now distant from home suffer the same, but thanks to this forum we are all getting to share our memories (often through rose tinted glassed I may add). I for one greatly value Matt's work which is more than considerable in keeping us all updated.
To return to you being homesick, sure you are only across the pond and a member of a platoon, nothing remains the same but it is our memories that help make our present, as for me, not a day goes by when I do not think of the Curragh and the people there I was/am lucky enough to know.

Hi Louis, Never a truer word was spoken, Im always homesick but as you rightly said I'm only across the pond and I do go home a couple of times a year and my family come over to visit as well. It would be lovely to be there now with the snow and time of year, but alas I have sunnier climates to go to. I'm off to Australia Saturday so I'm looking forward to that, off with some friends, and I'll enjoy the sunshine. So at work doing my last 4 night duties boy I'll need the rest. Also its lovely being part of the Morden Platoon and lovely having so many Curragh people in the one place and together. Mary C

Mary,
Homesick not about distance it is about all that makes up home and its memories of familiar people and places and the comfort derived from those things of our past.
Have a good hollier as the work and all entailed are only waiting around the corner on your return
Andy

Hi All and welcome Paddy, Glad to have you on board. I hope you enjoy all the bits of news/history and banter, great that you got on board so soon after our little chat. That Turf shed you spoke of is long gone and so to is that coal yard pictured in the shot of Pearse. The museum you spoke of is no longer in operation but it is reopening in another location just around the corner from Biddy Dobbins shop also long gone. This museum along with the usual Military items will also show a slice of life of the residents, people and items of interest of the Camp long since past. If you look in the photo gallerys linked from the forum you will see shots of your brother Sean and a few other shots of the caddies of the 60s which also inludes Sean and others of whom you will have known. The weather here is a bit severe what with freezing temps and snowfall. Wish we were young lads again, as the Golf Club hill would seem very inviting if you had a sheet of corrougated iron, or even your mams good Tea Tray. Glad you signed up, you will find that the site has a lot to offer in recalling days of yore. Kind regards to you and to Patty and all your family's.
JoeyK
