At 8.15 tonight TG4 are airing a story on the life and times of Dan Donnelly of Donnelly's Hollow fame. Andy Hi Andy, I saw some of that program purely by chance tonight. A funny thought about Donnelly occured to me: I remember, as a child, my father (from Kildare) telling us that Dan Donnelly was reputed to have arms that were very long, much longer than his height would suggest, and that this was the source of his boxing advantage. I saw the arm on TnaG4 tonight in a documentary and I thought the fingers looked very slender and long. They also described Donnelly as suddenly dropping dead at age 32. People with the genetic disease, Marfan's syndrome typically have very long arms and what are described as spider-like hands (arachnodactyly). The mutation causing this disease affects the tissue supporting matrix, Collagen, and leads to a weakening of the aorta, the main artery of the body, so that it forms aneurysms that may rupture. If undetected, people are known to suddenly drop dead at an early age, eg 20s or early 30s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfan_syndromeThis to me sounds a lot like Donnelly's situation . I understand that, in practise, such people are largely normal except for the long limbs and spider-like long fingers i.e. you wouldn't think they had something wrong with them until they suddenly drop dead. Has anyone ever proposed this as a theory before ?

Jerry, I did not know that you owned horses, sure if you give them a call nicely they might come in for you.
or are they the type Joey has where you contribute to their upkeep through the bookie if the latter I wish you luck and have a great birthday

Hi Neil,
thanks for the further info re Dan,
while I learned a lot from that programme it seemed to me that Mr Booze may have played a major factor in his death not to omit the savage clash of bone on bone for a fighter of those days I gathered that he was a great drinker of wine and a bottle of whiskey a day was no bother to him. Another thing that struck me while looking at the arm both there and when it was in the Hide Out, the fingers that you mention resembled to me at least E.T from the same film, maybe Spielberg got inspiration from Dan' arm
cheers Andy

You hit the nail on the F head, Joey and I have a half share in our local Bookies except they are like the Banks take all and give nothing back

Hi Neil That was an interesting read and throws new light on what may have been the demise of Dan Donnolly at such a young age. But as Andy has mentioned and I have read in various articles about his life, drink played a major part in it. And like all heroes, as I am sure he was back then, the celebrity life style may have been too much for him and the drink may have got out of hand and eventually killed him. But in the following article which appeared in the Kildare E-History library shows some good quality and close up pictures of Dan’s arm and hand may back up your theory and who knows open a new debate. www.kildare.ie/library/ehistory/2009/07/dan_donnellys_arm_naas_local_h.aspAll the best Matt

Thats a great idea Jerry, sure while you are there you might run into Matt he is Afghan bound and you Bosnia mind the body out there , practice your ground hog, or is there some other battle cry for keeping the body safe.
Do enjoy your trip and return safe,
