HI ALL.
apart from all them good memories i have a few bad ones as well one in particular was back in the early sixtys when my best friend my dog rinty fell victim to them b-----ds sheep farmers who laid poisin all over the curragh rinty would not kill a fly let alone one off there sheep not only my dog but they broke the hearts of a lot of other kids as well they put a scar in my mind for the rest off my life. the worst about it was nobody seemed to do anything about it at that time. thank god in this day and age they would be brought to justice and made pay for there crimes. good luck to all of you.

Hi Paddy, I remember poor Rinty, a thingyer Spaniel breed, and as you said, would not hurt a fly, he was not the only family Pet who succumbed to such draconian measures and many a teary eye was to be seen around the Camp when the family Pet was poisoned in such a manner by the Sheep men, it was a horrible way for them to die, strychnine poison was the stuff they used and I was always amazed that non of us kids suffered that fate, as we happily played around the Plains. I often remembered some of the elders trying to revive the dog by feeding it a mixture of soapy water and salt, this made the poor dog ill and sometimes the poor animal recovered. As you said it would NOT! happen in this day and age, as the laying of poison is totally banned on the Curragh, Health and Safety Act.
See you later Bud! Regards JoeyK

hi paddy,
I was just thinking about the same subject the other day, like you we lost a couple of dogs the same way, It was indeed a very cruel act,John Brown used to be called upon on a regular basis to try and extract the poison before it was to late he used to put the washing powder down the unfortunate dogs throat to make him sick and swing the dog by the back legs ,as far as i can remember he was successful on a good few occasions,it was a horrible time for dog and owner alike, when I look back I can understand the sheep Farmer's frustration when i think of all the poor unfortunate sheep i have came across on the curragh with their insides torn out, the sheep have no defense from dogs and often unlike you, owners didn't look after their dogs just let them roam freely the awful thing was farmers did not discriminate often poison would be left in gardens and backyards you wonder how children were not poisoned. I suppose its one of the not so nice things about the camp, for some reason its not as common now thank god I think both parties are more responsible farmer and dog owner .

Hi Paddy I remember rinty well if memory serves me right he was named after Rin Tin Tin aka the matinees film on saturdays in the Curragh Picture House. we had a lovely little Jack russel dog that followed my Father up from owen roe road, onto the parade ground every day, and would come back home after parade each morning to sit outside the front door and wait for the return of his master in the evening and run to him at the gate, one morning he was lying down as usual with his head between his front paws as if asleep and when the Da went by not a stir out of the dog the Da gets to the gate looks back calls the dog not a budge. he goes back looks down and calls the dog come on we will be late for parade. and on bending down to lift the dog up he found him as stiff as a poker piosened by the Baskets farmers. I saw tears well up in my fathers eyes and we were all upset for weeks on end, imagine throwing piosened meat into peoples back gardens indiscrimately with no regards for the safety of kids. all the best for now Johnny
