Joey.
This news of Johnny Behan has come as a shock to say the least.
No more to watch him ambling towards Brownstown to check on the gee gees I suppose that Urlingford has to gain

Re:Growing up in Pearse the things i remember!!! Hi all yes indeed it is sad to see the departure off the residents list of another vetern of the Curragh Camp. you could set your watch on Johnny as he went about his daily routine about the camp and on his pilgrimage to the bookies each day to check on the runners and riders after buying the paper in Centra, He will be sorely missed as he heads to his place of birth of Urlingford from where he departed over 70 years ago for the Curragh on foot to join up in the Army, during his Army career he taught many a young man how to drive in the army and as a member of the Bloods pipe band there was many a trip to the RDS for the horse show each July. to Johnny in greatful appreciation for all the help to me as a young raw and in experienced young lad in the Bloods many thanks and farewell to an old neighbour and hope to see you soon back up in the Curragh, Johnny

Re:Growing up in Pearse tce the things I remember!!! Hi all anyone remember the barracks Childrens Xmas parties, Films first then next door for a feast of buns crisps lemonade orange cake tea for the parents chips and bangers and the goody bags for the take aways, then the arrival of Santy, waiting your turn for to be called out and all your family gathering waiting in anticipation to see was your letter to Santy answered, and the sound and smell of caps as the lads played cowboys all day long and the girls playing house with their new dolls and t/sets, lets hear your stories about these parties, bye for now Johnny

Hi all, I'm Paul Durney, ex Pearse Tce young lad mentioned in Tommy Sweeney's article at the beginning. I lived in Nr. 7. I've been coming to the web site here on and off for a while. It's incredibly weird getting all these memory flashes and I'll have a few questions later. I can't get any faces to the names in the forum except for Tommy's and Pat Murphy's who was my closest buddy at the time. No wonder, with our respective Dads buying identical cars. It was difficult if you were up to mischief when one of the cars approached. Were you safe or not? I do remember the rounders and the hoops. Breaking my arm falling out of a tree. Making ice patches for skating in winter. Da coming home from Cyprus. And some young lad died in Pearse which seemed to cause quite a trauma for the terrace. Was his brother the cause? Davy something or other? I also vaguely remember a quarry or a sand pit at which Alan McDonald jumped off which gave me the hee bee jeebies. I thought he was dead! Was it really so high as I imagine? Also remember losing ALL my marbles to Pat one day but my Ma managed to get them back in the evening, so life went on. I played passionately at the dump all day Saturdays and came home stinking but happy. Also played in the incinerater containers amidst bloodied cotton and injection needles. Unbelieveable. I could go on forever. Here is one unsolved question I need answered. It may belong in the School forum but I'll try here first: our teacher in infants or high infants regularly read a story about a farmer who had a dog which used to bark at night and the farmer would come and cut off the dogs leg on the first night and on the next night the next leg and so on. The worst thing was it was'nt the dog that was causing the trouble but something else! Eitherways the story gave me nightmares but I soaked up the story everytime! Any information would be nice Second Question: does anybody remember the rangers running around the camp singing their songs? Amazing.
We moved from Pearce to the Hospital Grounds where Da worked and eventually we ended up in Kilcullen. I was 10 y.o when we left. ! I now consider myself a Shadower. And quite proud about it too!
I left Ireland in 1980 and am now married to a German lass and we have three kids. I've been showing then the site and of course they had heard most of the stories already. My wife thinks the Curragh must have been a special place. Even if, at the end it only remains in our hearts and minds - it's safe there, all the best from Germany. Paul Durney

Hi Paul
You are very welcome to the forum and I do hope that it brings back some very fond memories to you. I enjoyed reading your piece and that too brought back some memories for me also.
That’s the thing about this forum it always brings up new stuff that I had forgotten about and how lucky we were to have grown up in this unique place.
I look forward to reading some more from you in the future.
All the best

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the Forum, Regarding your memory of the singing while running through the camp yes the rangers did sing out loud and clear so much so that they were barred from doing so as some of the songs would not pass the censor, one that comes to mind is or was " I know a girl from Belfast City she's got whiskey.............. and so on".
I also worked with your grand dad I think, in signals Paddy was the man in charge of batteries in the battery room.

Hello there Paul Durney,
Interesting the user name you have chosen Bog man, I would have never have guessed who it was. It seems like donkeys years since I wrote that piece about growing up in Pearse Tce. I think you are slightly younger than myself. So I expect you may have some different memories. I haven't clamped eyes on you for years. I think someone pointed you out one time in Kilcullen you had a guitar strapped to your back now I could be wrong it was years ago. I chat to Pat every now and then, he is in great form, still fishing albeit lake fishing now I think he goes to the lakes with Pa Reilly. I see your living in Germany now, If my memory serves me correct Kieran Hughes, the brother of Davy the chap you talked about who died tragically all those years ago is living and working out there for years now. Its good to have the memories of living in the Curragh Camp, unfortunately you would not recognise Pearse now, just our block remains, less than half of it occupied the rest almost derelict. It awaits the demolition man Iam afraid. Keep an eye out on the site and if you are home around the time we meet up, twice a year or so, your more than welcome to come up and have a chat with all of the Shadower's.
P.S The stories about the farmer cutting the dogs legs off, Jays you have to ask yourself what planet the teacher was on traumatising the poor kids of the Curragh.
