;DHi All, As Christmas will soon be upon us, does anyone remember the Christmas parties that were held in the messes. I so looked forward to them to sit on Santas knee and see what pressie he had, we didn't get much but it was a lot to us in those days. Oh happy days, where have they gone. It didn't take much for us to be happy and have fun, kids these days just don't know how to have fun. Are the Christmas parties still going on in the messes does anyone know?
Cheers Mary C

Hello Mary C. What i Remember is the Christmas dinners at Plunkett dining hall and been served by the Officers.I think we got a couple of bottles of free guinness the dinner was great well presented with all the trimmings. The lovely flavored and decorated bowels of trifles a work of art in themselves and the cooks could really turn it on for the occasion. The lights would be switch off and the head cook in his chefs white apron and hat would bring in the Christmas pudding flamed in brandy. The dinner on that day was second to none and i alway liked to copy the lighting of the pudding every year at the Family Christmas dinner the curtain call for A. God this has given me an appetite. Regards Anthony.

Hi All, The Christmas parties in Pearse the high point of the year always eagerly awaited and the excitement as we scanned Easons and Powells windows trying to decide which of the displayed toys we were going to tell Santie we really wanted, changing your mind more than once. The night before hair wrapped up tight in rags for the ringlets going to bed looking like Medussa, not able to sleep due to a mixture excitement and your tightly bound head. But you knew it would be worth it the next day when your flowing locks were tied up in a few yards of new usually red ribbon. All new clothes bought for Christmas you got to wear them for the party and then they were put away for the big day itself. The white ankle socks held up with new elastic hand made garters cutting off all circulation from the knee down, the parents giving us a final inspection before we left the house. First the Laurel and Hardy/The three stooges Curly,Larry and Mo then the party itself tables piled high with biscuits sweets sandwiches jelly. We were waited on hand and foot all the adults joining in and helping out making sure we had a good time. A lot of effort and thought was put into those parties by our da's never really appreciated it at the time. Santie arriving and then you waiting for your turn to sit on his knee to tell him what it was you wanted. All the parents gathering round to hear your request in case you might have changed your mind and hadn't told them. Even though you whispered in his ear he'd always look directly at them giving a wink and say "so its a doll, cowboy suit etc. you want"? making sure they heard, and you went home a happy as Larry sure that your wish would be granted on Christmas morning, and you know what it always was. Magic times Regards to all MaryF.

Hi Tommy, How did the Christmas party go today? All of us from the Morden Platoon were fondly reminising about them and the fun, presents and food when we met up yesterday. Mind you the good factor feeling we had yesterday at being reunited with each other was as good as us having our own Christmas party, it was magical! I,m sure ye all had a whale of a time ;D both adults and kids. Are there still parties in all the barracks or is it one big joint one? Hope the kids got as much enjoyment as I,m sure you did Bye for now MaryF

Hi Geraldine. While in Germany on the evening we went on the wine tasting trip we had a container to spit the different wines into.Well I'm afraid i just couldnt spit it out and drank the lot and my Wife's as well as she doesn't like white wine and i drank hers as well only trying to be helpful.Hic so i had a good evening in the wine cellar on the banks of the Rhine.Got lots of chocs on the way back in Belgium ah as you said you only live once. I had another great day on Saturday with the Morden Platooners.
Wishing you a Happy Christmas and good Luck for 2010. Cheers Anthony

My Christmas speciality is trifle - the highlight of the annual CHRISTMAS PARTY for me was the Army made Trifle. Blood red proper jelly with loads of fruit, real custard and piled up on top with fresh cream and silver balls. I was so addicted then and ever since have made a copy of the same every year.
