Hi Kaytho,
When you got them new you would be crucified for the first day or two trying to keep them clean and new looking, if you got caught in a shower of rain they went all grey and washy looking as the whitening ran down the road ahead of you.
Was always delighted to get a new pair though. You wore your Communion shoes after the big day as well, the whitening was used on them to cover the big scuffs on the toes, so you had white and greyish brown shoes every Sunday.

Hi All, I remember when I was 17 I came to London to live with my sister Eileen and worked in a shoe shop called Ernie Noads, and I knew runners as runners and couldn't comprehend why they called them trainers or sneakers , to me they were runners, I also remember a customer coming into the shop and wanted to look at a pair of trainers he'd seen in the window and I hadn't a clue what he wanted and felt such a pratt but explained to him to me they were runners, which was a more appropriate name . I did last a few months in the job but got home sick and had to come home. MaryC

Hi Mary,
Don't feel too bad when my Aunt was in hospital in London after having her first child the PG Tips Tea advert came on the ward t.v. she told the woman in the next bed in all earnest that she did'nt know monkeys could talk until she came to England.
When my mother-in-law went over after about two months she got a bad dose of cystitis, she went along to the GP, he asked her all the usual questions and then asked her about intercourse, she had never heard the word before and thought it was the medical term for how often she was passing water, her answer was "oh up to ten times a night doctor" he told her he was'nt surprised she had cystitis and she would have to refrain for the next few weeks, she's sitting looking at him wondering how she is going to hold on that long.

Hi MaryC I am like yourself studying very hard at present, my subject is of the Equine body and wondering will he be able to last three miles, carry a lot of weight, stop himself from falling over and get over his shyness about passing others, his symptons are very complex plus the fact of his never having been out in good weather, I am hopeing to pass these GeeCeeGees shortly, any tips that will help with the studying? Hi Joey, Sorry don't think I can help you here with your geeceegees, maybe just a good study of the formula and maybe a few pisspills to help with the weight problems ;D and the one that is putting the weight upon the gee should have a little less medisinal fluid the night before, I know it may give him the confidence in passing others but may influence his falling over.;D. Happy studying. MaryC

Joey,
While on the subject of horses, an Aunt of my husbands married a Jockey, he was actually a brother of Danny Feane, Pearse. They had in total fifteen children, everytime my mother-in-law came home from England on holidays her sister was pregnant again, she goes back and sends home condoms, when another sister arrives at the house there are four or five bottles of milk each with a condom on top sitting on the draining board, when asked what are they doing there, she says Doris sent me them they're for keeping the flies out of the milk.

Hi All, Does anyone one remember collecting the silver paper? I think it was in aid of dogs for the blind! We used to wait for the fag packets to be finished and we'd then smooth out the inner silver paper using our fingernails very cautiously to avoid ripping. We did exactly the same to Easter Egg wrappers and every chocolate bar wrapper. In fact anything that was covered in foil was collected, smoothed out and if my memory doesn't fail me had to be weighed somewhere? Can anyone help me on that one? I wonder how many dogs our genuine efforts managed to get for the blind people? I don't know where ye are over there with the political correctness but, over here now the correct term is 'Enabling dogs instead of blind or guide dogs. I suppose it makes sense if you think about it! What good is a blind dog [as we used to say] to someone who cannot see? Bye For Now MaryF
