Hi All, Does anyone remember when we were kids and the soles of our shoes got wore out, we then had to stuff them with cardboard till our mum could get us another pair, or was that just me.

The holes in the shoes I do remember that, it was a pastime of mine when at mass to count how many well polished shoes had holes in them while the owners were kneeling. Don't see any now.

Hi Andy and Ann,
Do you remember the really cheap runners in Summer, instead of the polishing it was the whitening, they would be out on the windowsills drying, the girls wore white and the lads usually black, no NIKE etc., then, just a crap bit of canvas sewn on to a cheap sole. Don't remember having holes in the soles of my shoes, but I do remember the toes being cut out of them when I outgrew them. I also remember wearing dresses that the hem had been let down on to get the bit of extra wear out of them.
Remember being at the baths one day and one girl who came from a large family, put on a lovely snow white vest about three times too big for her, she then got a nappy pin and pinned it neatly between her legs, making a knickers and vest, her Mam was thinking on her feet when it came to spreading the few shillings around a large brood.
Rose.

Rose. not only were the clothes to big and turned up to fit, but as time went y and the garments were let down it could go to the stage of 3 or 4 let downs and the creases never left the garments

Hi rose, andy, and all, Being the youngest of nine, i know all about second hand clothes, everything i got was handed down, except the jumpers and cardigans my mother would knit us for Xmas. I don't remember this story, but my sister noeleen says, that my mother often helped out at the jumble sales in the Gaelic hall, and on one occasion came across 2 nice dresses for us, but one day a girl from the curragh said to noeleen, they were our dresses, my ma gave them in to the jumble sale, of course noeleen quickly replied, they couldn't be, my aunt mary sent them to us from cork, to this day noeleen would not buy her children any second hand, she never forgot that experience.

I reckon any child other then the first born was destined for the hand me down, sure as we got older wern't we glad to borrow or steal our siblings clothes.
We were not to worried about them being second hand then

Ann,
I reckon they wear their fair share of second hand gear albeit under the guise of helping charity by buying from the charity shops and not forgetting the designer , swap shops etc
