Hi Matt, A start on my Family History and the meaning of our name.
English (northern border counties): habitational name from a place so named in Northumberland, possibly from Old English heahdeor ‘stag’, ‘deer’ or h?ddre ‘heather’ + -ing ‘characterized by’ + tun ‘farmstead’, ‘settlement’. This surname has been established in Ireland since the 16th century.

Hi Matt, You can't have one without the other:
The boy's name Harpur \ha(r)-pur\ is a variant of Harper (Old English), and the meaning of Harpur is "harpist, minstrel
Family Motto: Pleasant and Brave
It looks like both families Laois and Wexford came from Scotland

Hi Matt, My Grandfather Richard Hetherington joined the Army on the 06/09/1940 during the Emergency. His Army number was E/433411 he trained in the CTD and was then posted to the 25th Bn. He was attached to Depot S&T and also the 3rd Bn. Richard was employed as a Cook Class 2 for his time in the Army. He was discharged from the Army after the emergency as this was what his contract was for. The date of discharge was 21/01/1946 having served for 5 years and 141 days. During this period Richard Hetherington and Paddy Harpur would have crossed paths in the 25th Bn as Paddy ( My other Grandfather) was attached to the 25th as a Medic. A point to note my parents were not born at this stage.

Hi Tommy Just looking at your Grandfather Richards Number, E/433411, my Dads number throughout his service was E/433647 a total of 156 persons between. I do know that my dad served in the 3rd Battalion initially and would definitely have met your Grandfather. My Dad was a very good friend of Paddy Harpur throughout their careers and I am almost certain that they would have met also under the above circumstances. Incidentally my dad also trained Jimmy Power on his NCOs Course somewhere along the line. Regards JoeyK

HI Tommy Hetherington, My name is Patrick Hetherington and i came across your tree and think we might have a connection through William Hetherington circa 1798 . However i am having a problem confirming this . Did the William Hetherington cited above have a son John born circa 1824 ? The Aghaboe baptisms record do not seem to be complete . Our side of the Hetheringtons go back to Ballacolla through a Timothy Hetherington B 1861 son of John with a brother John . The parish , year of birth , father and next of kin confirmed by Army records and marriage records . But no baptism records for either Timothy or John. Have you in your research come across any of these people? Any help would be greatly appreciated .
