Louis,
The genealogy experts in Kildare Village, are only available there Thursday and Fridays, but the main site is Roots.ie a very good site with info up to 1920 and in cases a year or to further, there are still a couple of counties not on it , regardless still a very good site, user friendly, and easy to follow.

Andy,
I agree that the Roots website is user friendly and through it and other free genealogy sites available I have amassed a lot of information regarding the ancestry of the various branches of my own family in Ireland and linked up to the British side also. I encourage others to do likewise as in my case it has led to me finding new friends and cousins not only in Ireland and the UK, but from all over the world whilst at the same time learning so much more about the history of Ireland and England. We are lucky in Ireland that so much genealogy is available totally free of charge and look forward to the publication (if it is still going to push through) of the census from the 1920s. I hope so, so that I can fill in yet some more gaps in my research. Roots is always worth returning to as the information on it is continually being added to.
Have a great weekend Andy
Slainte

Hi, It's nice to find a historic web site so well organized. I recently came into possession of a handwritten note from an aunt and referring to her grandfather Robert George Pither. She notes him as "commanding" the Curragh Camp (circa 1910?). Does anyone have any information on this person - my paternal great grandfather Pither b.1844?

Hi Roger, Don't know if this is going to be of any help to you but if your greatgrandfather was born 1844 the time scale you're looking for him 'commanding' on the Curragh would have made him 65!!in 1910 a bit of a stretch! However if you google www.thewardrobe.org.uk/ then go for research and then follow on to regimental timeline, you will find the daily movements of the 1st Battalion Royal Berkshire regiment between 1905 and 1908 which took them from Dublin through to wicklow, kildare, carlow, and Laoise. It ended up with them stationed at Beresford Barracks which to us lot after the change over became known as Ceannt Barracks But most importantly for you is once you're on that site type in SBYRW33313 for a picture of 1st,bn Royal Berkshire taken in Ireland circa 1907 which features a L.Corporal Pither, he may be a relative of yours, worth a try eh, hope this is of some help to you! Hi Roger Thanks for your comments and welcome to the forum. I have looked through the index of a number of books on Curragh History and I am afraid that I haven’t seen anything that mentions Robert George Pither. I did however look up the Surname "Pither" in the Irish National Archives and the Census of 1901 and there is a mention of what appears to be two brothers aged 18 and 22 in Kilkenny Barracks. I know that this is not what you are looking for but perhaps it could be another piece of the jigsaw. Hi, my name is Liam Pierce and I'm doing a project on my family history. My Grandfather's maternal uncle Duncan Fowler went to Canada as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan and trained at the 9th elementary school at Ontario. On the 16th of December 1941, on a delivery flight his spitfire crashed at clogher strand, Donegal and was arrested and taken to the Curragh Camp. I read a number of canadian archive newspapers, and I found his name. I was hoping if anyone had any information or any photos that i could identify him in. My email is liamp95@live.ie Many thanks

Hi folks. I'm hoping that someone can help me out. Does anybody remember Vinny/Declan or Tommy Stokes in the Curragh? I'm piecing together a family tree and am seeking info/stories/pictures etc. I'm Vinny's son who was only a few months old when he died in 1980. Any help would be very much appreciated. Vinny

Re:Military History And Family Traditions Hi Vinny and welcome to the forum. I lived on the Curragh with your Grandparents and went to school with most of your Aunts and Uncles including Your Late Father Vinny (RIP) Isoldiered with 2 of your uncles Gene and Declan(RIP) your Grandparents left the Curragh and resided in Suncroft (Churchview) just outside the Curragh. Your Uncle Tommy was a very good Boxer in his days in the Army and all of the Stokes brothers were very highly skilled Hurlers at underage level when liveing in the Camp, as Tommy Snr, was a keen coach and along with George Quinlan and Lofty Dwyer coached us a young lads at football and mainly hurling to good success there is on the site a photo of the Curragh Hurling squad of about 1965/66 of which were coached by your grandfather.i havent seen your uncle Gene in years, and i beleive he is resident in England at present. you do not say as to where you are living at present and i will try and get some Photos for you if I can. army photos are scarce at present because of a large change of units broken up and amalgamated into one unit or other and a lot of photos are mislaid or lost because of this. but i will try and sort something out for you. bye for now. keep well Johnny

Hi Johnny. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I wasn't aware of some of what you said so thanks. I've seen the old hurling photo form '64 and identified Tommy Stokes and Gene. What I'm after in particular is more info/photos on vinny(my dad) and Tommy (my Grandad). This forum has already provided some brilliant leads and hopefully more will follow. Cheers!!!
