Can anybody remember two friends of mine who served in the Curragh many, many years ago. We were great pals in our young days, but lost touch as so many people do. One was Jim Murphy from Kilkenny. As far as I know he served in the 2nd FAR reaching the rank of CQMS (?). He retired to live in Tramore.I only recently discovered that he died 3or4 years ago and is buried only 5 miles from where I live near Inistioge. The second guy was Pady Synnott, a native of Co. Wicklow. I think he also served in the 2nd FAR. Ihaven't heard of him since 1968. Both of these guys joined up about 1961/2 n Cathal Brugha and were transferred to the Curragh after basic training. Anyony ever hear of them. Drylander

Hi Guys. Kinda lost the run of myself with my last thread. 2nd FAR were stationed in McKee Bks. and not the Curragh, so that's where these two guys would have served. Old age must be creeping in faster than I thought.

Anyone remember an old Curragh friend of mine, Cpl. Christy Lawlor MPC. He used to spend a lot of time collecting and making blackthorn walking sticks as a hobby. Jim.

Hi Jim' I remember Christy Lawlor well, he was a few years older than ourselves and quite a Curragh character. I remember his blackthorn style sticks well also, he always seemed to be whittling away on a piece of stick and I remember he used to refill his'Zippo' lighters from the fuel tanks (Zippo hanging on a long piece of string) of the Land Rovers parked near the new wall delivering the rations. There were quite a few characters working in those years in the glasshouse. I used to count the bricks when on 'New Wall' duty to pass the time, but it was a plum spot as you were sure of a regular heart warming cuppa from the kitchen!
regards
Louis

Ah! Yes Louis, The New Wall, Hickory Lane, Alpha, the Excercise Yard and my pet hate, that duty between the Compound Gates! I often left there dizzy after my eight hours!

Jim, It was the South Gate if my memory serves me correctly, not much room to move around to be sure and nothing to do but open gates for the full shift, and 'everybody' had to pass through there no matter where they were headed. It was a mind numbing duty to be sure. Louis
