Hi Drylander. & Tommy H. Another way some lads used to keep the crease in was to use Copydex. I never tried it myself. I have seen trouser destroyed this way if the Copydex was not used carefully. I have also seen boots ruined with Cardinal Red Floor Polish and the Soldier been told on parade he had sick boots. The policy in those days have something ruined lost or stolen was .pay for that item plus the new one. Not pay for one get one free. Cheers Anthony

Hi All. I was just looking at the photos in galley 3 and two of them caught my eye which were taken in the 60s. The first photo is the bottom right where they are loading the armour car.The Trooper on left just behind Matt's Godfather Jim Donnolly is Tom Kelly. I will now draw your attention to the NCOS course in 1963 on the third row from the front and the second from the right is Tom Kelly. The first from the left in the back row is leonard not sure about his Christian name.??Joe Connolly back row second from the right he was also at McDonagh the same time as me.Can anyone put names to some of others in the picture??? Cheers Anthony

Hi Anthony,
On the front row from the left is Joe Leigh RIP, Con Conneely, my dad Mick Smith RIP, the last man on the front row is Sam Shanahan and I think directly behind him is Jim Delaney, loved when the sailors were in the Depot Dad was involved in the training and when they passed out they usually sent a pressie over for myself and my sister.

He taught me to drive the beaverets and about the Rolls Royce engine in them. He was also with the 37th Batt in the Congo. Does anyone on site remember him and what a nice man he was?? Can anyone name any of the others in the photo?? Rose ??Am i right with the name or could it be McDonagh and not McDonald the mind playing tricks again ??But i do know the man. Help me if you can.
Cheers Anthony.

Hi Everybody. While on guard in Plunkett Bks one evening we had a Corporal of the guard who liked a drink. He came on guard half cut and went away to get more drink and came back with a bottle of whiskey. He was really drunk by about 10.30 and we had taken the whiskey from him and put him to bed in the cell. The orderly Officer who we knew to be very strict arrived. He asked for the Corporal of the guard from outside the guardroom window. We tried to cover up for him and said he was gone to check around the Barracks. The Officer said i will come back later to see him. The next thing the Cpl came up behind us to the window. The Officer took a look at him and told us to open the door and let him in.He said Cpl your drunk and im relieving you of your duty and placing under arrest. We had to march him out to the square. Then march him back to the guardroom and lock him in the cell. This soldier was quite elderly at the time .and kept trying to argue with the young Officer.Just thinking about it now what about his Family whoes money he wasted and the disgrace. What a bad example for an NCO to give to the young soldiers on duty with him. Cheers Anthony

Hi Tommy. Its a sight to behold when you see them coming and i hope they don't use it to knock another block. That Officer had a few bars of chocolate on his shoulders and I'm sure one or two medals on his chest? Joking aside its nice to see a bit of ceremony.I never did drive a tank myself just the armour cars and beveretes .Thanks for the memory i wish i was young and i would join up again . Cheers A

Anyone remember ''Sean Brennan''? He was at one time military police, but then went to signals. That would have been in the 50's. He moved to Athlone when the signal unit transferred there in 1959.

Hi Anthony, Well my dad was from Wexford, but he was dark haired. I never heard anyone ever mention that he did any boxing. May have been a relation of his, who knows. Then again there are a lot of Brennans in Wexford. My man is from Newbridge. Her name before she married was Maureen Barnwell. Anyone remember her? A few cousins still living in newbridge. Have a few photographs of those days in the Curragh - 1950's - found them in an old tin one day in my mams house. My dad was fond on taking photographs. Like meself.
Regards...Paul
