Hello all, I live near Ballincollig and do some work on researching B Army there. Of course The Curragh came into my researches. My brother, Martin Hogan, used to teach in the Boys school in the 1950s and was involved with the scouts especially the group who went to Lourdes in 1958 for the anniversary. he also was, and is, a keen golfer. Winning amongst other competition - The Golden Ball-. Has anyone any photos or memories of him? It would be fun to have them for him.
He will be 80 years old on September 2nd next and we are having a reunion of all 12 of his brothers and sisters and a pile of nieces and nephews. he spent many years teaching in Canada before retiring to Portlaoise. Does anyone know if a copy of Born under the shadow compiled by Joey Kelly is still available and where it can be bought. Many thanks Anne

Hi Anne Donledson, My name is John J Curran. I was a pupil of your brother in the 1950’s and also I remember him as the scoutmaster. I went with him on summer camp to Bunclody in Wexford in 1958. He particularly liked my porridge for which he gave me a merit badge for cooking. He had at that time a very snozzy scooter. I think it was either an NSU or a Heinkil. Some of the teachers of the time would not be on my Christmas card list but I will always remember your brother as a kind and fine teacher. He will not remember me I’m sure as you always only remember the very bad students or the very good students and I was just average. I know this as I became a teacher myself for 39 years. I am delighted to hear of him after so many years. Please give my very good wishes to him. Regards JJ

Hello JJ, Thank you for replying and for the kind words. I will certainly pass them to him. He was I am sure a remarkably imaginative teacher. The Bike was a Heinkel. He used to commute from home in Ballyfin. on winter's nights that bike would appear on our kitchen floor, be taken apart, serviced, rebuilt and head off to the Curragh next morning. He never married but his quiet contribution to his nieces and nephews and numerous other young people is legendary. Thanks again Anne

Hi Matt, Great photos, along with the regulation sandals I'm loving the tank tops, huge lapels (cringing at the flashbacks of some of the ones I sported myself but thought I looked 'it' ) and the hairstyles well the less said the better on that score . You all looked as if ye were having a ball all the faces look familiar any names to go with them to jog the ould memory and give the brain a kick start. MaryF

Hi Anne Donaldson, Have you seen the pictures on page 1 of this thread. Its of the Lourdes scout group 1958 with Fr Brophy afraid your brother is not in it but it has all the boys names which he might remember. A second one shows the troop doing a guard of honour. MaryF

Hi Anne and Andy I have indeed fond memories of my time in with Martin Hogan. I remember he tried to introduce us to hurling which was an uphill battle as the Curragh was mainly a football location. He got us to buy hurleys which had a wedge of hardwood spliced into the boss of the hurley. I must confess I spent most of my time using the hurley in the handball alley in McDonagh., or playing rounders in the green near the alley. I think the GAA banned those type of hurleys as I’ve never seen them anywhere else. As a half Kilkenny man, if they were still available it is very likely I would have come across them or tripped over them in the street. As you say Andy, no butts about it, as a teacher he was one of the good guys. regards JJ

JJ.
To be fair and honest, Butts or no Butts, there were more good guys then bad guys, many I have fond memories of.
