Anyone recall an infamous trip to curraghcloe in the late seventies? We stayed there for a week in two man army tents. We were set up in a big field near the beach. It was my first taste ( at aged 10 i think) of what military life was going to be like.Discilpline was the operative word that week!!!!

Hello Matt. I was delighted to see the photo of the 1949 Troop, of which I was a member. I will do my best to try and identify the lads, but after 50 years you will have to forgive my memory. Anyway Matt, here goes. Front Row kneeling - Aidan Hunter RIP ? ? C. Boyle RIP Chubby Geary RIP Sheamy Douglas, Cyril Houlihan (Mise) M. Collins, M. Mullen, 2nd Row Seated. Mike Houlihan. ? ? Pat McNamara, ? P. Ryan, Mr. Kneafsey NT Scout Master, Mick Collins Powell, SPL - Cannot remember his name but his dad was Sgt Major in McDonagh Bks. ? Arthur Duffy. Back Row. Mr. Darling. Mr. McCormack (Butt) T. Behan, Noel Cummins. Stan Poole RIP ? Johnjoe Sheedy. ? Ronnie Brown, Pat McGrath. Charlie McGrath, Tommy Miller, Tommy Cullen, Fr. Hayden. The photograph was taken at the rear of the Gaelic Hall and was after a play we put on, hence the fancy dress.

Hi Anthony. A little more about Chubby. When he retired from the Army, he became a Fire Officer with Dublin Port. I meet with a friend of his who worked with him and he still played handball until he passed away in April 1997. I last met Chubby in Elizabethville in Dec 1961. I was with the 36 Bn. but I cannot remember if he was on his way home with the 35th or was he a member of the 36th? Prior to retiring from the Army, I served with Chubbys son Brian in McKee Bks. He is a credit to his late father and to the Defence Forces. Kindest Regards Anthony. Cyril.

Hi Cyril. Nice to hear from you and thank you for getting back to me . Chubby Geary was with the 37th Batt in Elizabethville and we were stationed near King Leopold Farm .We had just left the Airport from Dublin on our flight to the Congo And Chubby stood up and in a loud voice said hello Ma we have just pass the Curragh. He used to act as MC out there and put on various acts of entertainment.I used to dance on stage and he called me the twisting kid. All great fun Cheers Anthony

Hello Anthony. Nice to hear from you. My old memory is not what it used to be. I thought Chubby was with the 35th. Anyway, we were both in the same class together in the Boys School on O"Higgins Rd. Our first teacher was Mr. Hickson, then Mr. Breen and finally Mr. Sheehan who was the Head Master. Mr, Sheehan lived in No. 1 and 2 W.O. Qrs, Clarke Bks until his retirement. Chubby was a beautiful singer and in every concert we put on in the Gaelic Hall, he was singled out as a soloist. He could bring the house down with his wonderful rendition of ballads. And as for handball, not one of our age could even come near him in the Alley. My friend who worked with him in Dublin Port told me that he kept himself very fit at all times. Alas Anthony, the world is a poorer place for his passing. Ar Dheis De go raibh a ainm. Regards Anthony, Cyril.

Howya Rik. I was good friends with your brother Sean back then.
I was in the cubs first and scouts later. Had great times. Football blitzes, scout shows, planes trains and automobiles, summer camps in Liverpool , scout discos, snooker competitions in newbridge and most important winning the Kildare & Leighlin shield 3 times in a row and going on to All Ireland in Larch Hill or Waterford.
I remember Popeye Phelan, Denny Phelan, Sean Power, Peggy, Christina O'Grady, Jenny Power, JJ Purcell, Martin Purcell and of course the great Murty (RIP). We must have been the best trained scout troop in Ireland in that period.
Some of my best memories as a kid revolve around adventures with the scouts. Sure we had an amazing playground i.e. The Curragh Camp not to mention the best camping equipment "borrowed" from the army!
