Hi Gang, Oldest building Trivia The building mentioned by myself and matt 1872 may not be the oldest. I am not sure when the tower was built but it 1861 or older but the point here is that a few buildings in this area seem to be made of the same material and not rd brick. The Squash club, a building behind the old band hall close to the wes and one building at the entrance to the Board of Works. At a glance the Camp as we see it seems to have spread out from he clock tower.

Well Done Matt!
I believe the nurses had a bar in their living quarters and there was an active bar in the old Rugby Club, (attached to the old gym) before they relocated to the new clubhouse beside the old obstacle course in McDonagh. In its hayday, there may have been a small bar in Clarke Officer's Mess

Tommy,
Regarding the old building trivia. The Brits erected a military camp at it's current location around 1855-6 during the Crimean War. They built a series of wooden huts and they only later started building permanent structures. They started building some permanent structures in the 1860s & 1870s. I'm sure Matt's photos may shed some light on this. The late 1800's photos show no Water Tower or plantations. Early 1900s photos show the camp as it is today.
That's why I believe that the old Boys Primary School may be the oldest standing structure in the Camp, which I think was built in 1863 (that ballpark). There may have been even older building, but these were knocked down before we were born.
Great questions and a wonderful forum.
Brendan

Hi Tony,
The dances were a bit before my time as well, but i have an older sister and i can remember her getting ready to go to dances which took place in a room which was part of the Wes. they also had jumble sales in there.

There were many Military Camps on the Curragh prior to the first permanent Camp training troops for the Crimean War (1853-1856). The Duke of Wellington had stopped off at a temporary camp on the way to Cork (1808) to sail to the Peninsula Wars. The lack of of a permenent source of water caused abandonment of those camps, Messrs Holme drilled a shaft and found a good constant supply of water at 54 feet, 1858 saw plans for the Clock Tower, water works and the building that holds the present Squash Courts. Photographs show that two timber churches sat each side of the tower, my mother often spoke of the Catholic Church, which had being destroyed by fire, being on the McDonagh side and the Protestant Church on the McDermott side.

Hi There as far as my memory serves me Lough Bawn was located out around Lumville . If you are coming from Newbridge via the Green Road you used to be able to see the Rushes ahead and to your left as you crossed over to enter the Curragh via Pearce. Cheers for now Sean Tracey
